I just found a 1998 JD 855 with 140 hrs on it, garaged, 4wd hydro trans, #7 backhoe, #70 loader, calcium filled turf tires and a new york rake. It's been used only for residential use. The owner is asking $21,000 for the package. It seems a bit steep to me but then again it's barely used. Is this a fair price? I'm going to look at it tomorrow and would appreciate some input before I start haggling.

Darryl,
That price seems a little high for me. I paid $ 16,000 last year for my 96 955 w/ 70A loader, 6' rear blade, R4 6 ply tires and 250 hours. It was not garaged, but was covered outside. Used JD backhoes can be had for around $4000, $ 6000 new. A price around $ 18K might be more realistic. ....

I bought a '96 JD855 last fall. 225 hours, garage kept, residential use only, HST, 4WD, 70A loader, 60" mid-mower, 6' rear blade, 4' york rake for $14,500. I do not consider it cheap, but a fair price. In my area (southeast New York state), I would probably be willing to pay up to $20,000 for the machine you describe. I would figure a similar price to mine without the backhoe, given that yours has slightly lower hours, 2 years newer, but no mid-mower. That allows $5,500 for the hoe. I hope this helps. ....

I am selling an 855 myself with 365 hours for $11,000. It has loader, tilt and top hydrolics on the rear three point. The tilt top should be worth a $2,000+ to the value. I bought it for about mid 12k which included tax. I have inquired about the backhoe and that is probably 7,000 or so more. However, I think that was higher because the confussion of quotes on the 4600 additions I am currently considering. I did like the 855 but for the soils I have the added weight and power would be helpful. Can not fault the tractor good machine the hydro makes for easy loader work.
Any comment about the 4600?
I am looking seriously at the 4600. I drove the 1070, 4500 and the 4600 all about the same tractor and thought the features of the 4600 made it more attractive then the 1070 and the more hp (about 5hp) more desirable to the 4500. I will be adding a 4 in one bucket to it and the tilt and having been spoiled with the tilt and top feature I will be adding that as well. the 4600 was used in the vinyard and typicaly less then 100 hours. I think the price is 18k for the 4600 + an adding 4-7k for the adds. How does that sound?

I finally got a chance to look at this 855. It's in great shape, not a scratch on it. I offered the seller 17K and he countered with 19K. Should I go for it? It's more than I want to spend for a used tractor, but having the backhoe would make my life a lot easier. I'm a little worried about the PTO H.P. though. I'm afraid it won't have enough guts to run a brush chipper, power rake or 5 foot brush hog. I was seriouly considering getting a new 790 which has more PTO H.P., but having the hydro transmission would be nice for all the loader work I need to do.
Any comments would be appreciated. ....

I just sold a 855. I moves a 5' bush hog fine. There was a little power dip when I ran through a 2"suckling but not bad. I am looking now at the 4600 which is twice the pto power. I needed more power for an auger. When I got to the last foot of a 4' depth it had gotten stuck. This is also because the soils were damp to wet near trees I water. This caused the clay to hang it up. I used a 4" tiller with it no problem. A two row off set 18" disks totaling 16 disks on a 5 or 6 foot widt set up. I also had about 300 hours 365 when I sold it. I paid approx. k$13k sold for $10.6k. It had a loader with scraper box with 4 dropout scarifiers. The back hoes fun close to $7k.
Good luck
