Greetings all,
Fantastic forum you have here! Glad I came across it on a
Google Search!
I have a Cub 7254 sitting in my garage right now and I have
a few days to get back to the dealer and let them know if I
am going to take it or not.
It's a 03 7254 with the Industrial tire option, 25HP Kaw
Gas with 218 hours it has the 610 Loader and the 60" MMM
deck.
Overall condition is very clean, there is some rust on the
ROPS bolts and a couple nicks and scratches but nothing bad
the loader and deck are both in excellent shape and the rims
and tires are perfect.
They are asking 10K and they are going to give me 5K trade
in on my John Deere 425 which has a 46" MMM a front mount
PTO Snow Blower, Enclosed Cab and a brand new front blade I
just bought the week before last.
My Deere has 1080 hours on it but it's in excellent shape,
most dealers offered me 3K but this Cub dealer is offering
$5400.00 and they said bring 5K cash out the door (taxes
and everything covered).
They changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, hydraulic
fluid and filter and greased all the zerks, dropped it off
to me with a full tank of fuel and said "have fun! Call us
in a couple of days" mind you I have no money down and my
Deere is still in my garage! :)
They are very pleasant to deal with to say the least! I
was looking at the Kubota BX23 but I was honestly not
impressed at all.. This is the second time in my life
where Kubota was a dissapointment. I used to own a Yanmar
Diesel with a hoe and loader and grater (selling it was a
big mistake) but even back then the Kubota couldn't compare
to the Yanmar.
Anyway I used the 7254 tonight for a few hours it runs
super, it's comfortable, all the controls are well laid out
and most importantly it's a SHARP looking machine :)
Does the deal sound reasonable? I have seen 7254's with
less hours going for 7-8K and I found a new one for 11K
but none of them had any impliments or mowers and didn't
have the industrial tires either.
I also want to add a backhoe to this and I have some questions
about the backhoe. The Cub dealer told me if I go with Cub's
hoe that it will be a miserable pain in the hiney to run the
hoe and the MMM they said it's honestly a four hour job to
take off all the mower deck bracketry and bolt on the sub
frame for the hoe and then it all has to come back off to
put the MMM back on.
For me that's not an option as I do want to use it to mow
my grass and a pull behind is not something I am interested
in either.
So I was looking at the Woods BH6000 hoe and subframe kit,
it looks like thier subframe allows the use of the MMM? If
no one here has an answer to this I will call Woods and
talk to them but I figured I would see if anyone here has
the Woods hoe and what thier opinion is.
I had a Woods hoe on my Yanmar and it was a great hoe and it
never gave me any problems and this new BH6000 looks to be
a lot heavier built than the Cub hoe.
Thoughts/Opinions?
Thanks so much in advance,
Brett

I'm not familiar with the Cub model that you're considering. I would definitely contact Woods and inquire about the BH installation. You definitely want a sub-frame type of mount that doesn't take 4 hrs to hook-up.
Most of us here have CUT's with diesel engines. The original "New" price for a gas unit is lots less than for a diesel. The question you should ask yourself "is a gas unit OK with you?"
I'm not sure what your unit was actually worth new with the existing equipment, etc. You can look at it in terms how much it is worth beyond your existing tractor. If the dealer is offering you $2,000.00 more for your trade-in, you could look at it like you could take $2,000.00 off the top and then what does the deal look like. Or is the unit worth $5,400.00 more than your existing.
$5,400.00 for an up-grade doesn't sound bad, but you won't have a snow-blower,blade or Cab. What are your plans to replace them or are you going without? If you have to purchase all these things extra, the deal doesn't look so sweet anymore. You may want to look at a used unit that has these accessories.
Sounds like the dealer is good from a sales aspect but how about service. He sounds almost to good to be true unless you've done lots of business with him in the past. I'd be a little skeptical (but that is my nature). ....

Pete,
Thanks for the reply!
You can purchase this tractor new (there are still a few around)
for about $8K without the mower or the loader and with turf
tires.
The 60" deck is a little over 2K and the loader I beleive is
close to 3K for this model.
I found some used on the net in the 7K range with the 60"
deck and lower hours but I haven't found any with the deck
and the FEL for anywhere near that price. I did find one
for 11K with the deck and FEL and it had less hours (75 if
not mistaken) but IMHO 218 hours is still nothing.
The dealer in question is a small family run business and
my father knows the owner personally and I checked everything
they said they serviced and it checks out.
This is tons more tractor than a Deere 425 it's not even a
comparison really. The 425 was a mistake to be honest with
you.. I bought the 425 mid winter so I haven't had it long
but taking 3 hours to push around 20 ton of gravel was an
absolute joke.. This Cub would have made short work of it
in less than 30 minutes!
The cab on the Deere is a pain in the rear.. The snow blower
isn't needed. I will eventually want either a front or rear
mont grading blade and that's more than enough to move the
snow too.
Gas or Diesel doesn't matter as long as it has the power to
do the job and after moving a couple tons of dirt last night
with ease I am impressed!
I just called Woods tech support and they told me the subframe
kit for the BH6000 Backhoe for my tractor is compatible with
the 60" Deck only.... Good thing it has the 60 :)
I honestly think this is the best way for me to go right now
I don't want to spend much more than 15K total and to get
into the new 6000 series with the Cat Diesel, FEL, MMM and
a Hoe would be close to 25K and that's too much for my blood.

Sounds like the deal is right for you!
I love my 7275 Cadet but have been thinking of parting with it, just to get something newer but for no other reason. The change in my case doesn't seem to justify itself. I think you will be happy with your choice and that is a big step up. Having the loader is the real advantage. ....

Pete,
Thanks, yep it sounds like the tractor for me! Like I said
before I would love to buy the new Cat Diesel job but I can
not justify the price for what I need it to do.
This dealer has treated me like gold, I talked to them today
and explained there were a couple K Pins missing and the
D-Ring on the pin for the loader was missing. They are
giving me new pins and I also noted the decal on the tranny
hump was a bit chewed up on the edges, they are ordering
me a new decal too :)
I am very pleased!
Thanks! ....

Hi Pete,
Well I decided to chomp the bit and just buy the 6284D with
the FEL, Backhoe and 60" 3 Point Mower :) I kept nit picking
the used machine, rust here, paint chipped there... You know
how it goes, had to have the "new tractor smell" :D
They will be delivering the 6284 and taking my Deere 425 and
thier own Cub I have at my house. That CAT is a hell of a motor! ....

Although owned by CAT you will have a hard time finding it under the CAT site. The engine specs are under the Perkins site. You can not go far wrong with a Perkins (CAT). ....

Peters,
Thanks for the link! I was trying to find it on Cat's site
and could not locate it. So it's subbed out.... Still, going
by the specs it's a robust engine which I am sure will give
me many, many years of great service (and torque!) Long Live
the Diesel! :)
Thanks a bunch, I will take delivery of my new beast mid
week hoe and loader will be mounted on her, my 60" rear
mower is on order and should arrive in a week or so. ....

Well I took delivery of the yeller and beige beast on
Friday. I am waiting for my 60" Three Point Finish Mower
to come in (backorder) and my 12" bucket for the hoe. The
hoe has a 16" bucket on it now and IMHO that's just too big
for my needs.
What do I think of her?
Awesome machine! Wow this Cat (Perkins) Diesel is a work
horse with nice amounts of power and fantastic fuel consumption.
I do have some gripes about the tractor but I think I could
apply the same gripes to most CUT's.
The backhoe drags if you get into gullies (sort of expected
it to drag a bit). The front end loader needs teeth...
I wish I could "lock" it in 4WD not that the automatic 4WD
doesn't work (it does) I just kinda wish I could keep it in
4WD all the time just for piece of mind.
The subframe on the hoe hangs down a bit lower than I would
like, but it also helps to protect the hydrostat fluid
filters and the transmission in general.
The hoe is STOUT! 970 Lbs worth! It has no problem getting
down and dirty and I have yet to "tax" the system even at
idle the hoe just rips through the ground.
The hydrostat is whiney... I am sure they all are... The
7000 series gas job they lent me was also whiney.. I was
used to my old Yanmar being a gear case/shuttle shift no
whine but a PITA to use at times.
The dealer I bought from has treated me like gold! Seriously
they have gone the distance for me.. I am sure part of it
is because people don't walk in and drop 23K and change on
a tractor every day... But besides the point they have made
the purchase something to enjoy!
