Bill, I am very interested! I want to build one and maybe two.
Good work so far.
Please post updates.
Did you buy the Metkit materials kit?
I can see where the kit would be great. I would not want to try to drill those holes.
How the heck do the stabilizer pads function, anyway?

Don, I did go ahead and buy the steel from Metkit. Not only did the local steel suppliers ignore me, the two I talked to just didn't seem interested in this "small" order. I figured that I could save some money, but the large diameter holes would present a problem in my home shop. All in all, I think that the kit is the way to go.
The stabilizer pads press into the ground and serve as a base for the hoe to dig against. As the Cadplans engineer says in the plans, these hoes work by "clamping" material between the bucket and the stabilizer pads. The stabilizers are adjusted vertically with holes and pins (no hydraulics, hydraulic stablizers are an expen$ive option) and the whole hoe is lifted and lowered with the 3 point hitch.
The more I learn about this machine and "big" backhoes, the more I see that the Cadplans hoes are like a backhoe, but not really the same. Still, I think will be very usefull for my intended purposes of fixing drainage on my land and getting rid of tree stumps.
I'll try to post updated pictures on Saturdays. So far, I have 18-1/2 hours of fabrication time in on this project.
Thanks for the positive comments. I can't wait to finish it.
