I just acquired a used 6x4 Gator with 1900 hours. The engine (Kawasaki FD620D-JS11) runs great but most of the time the primary clutch does not seem to close all the way (the belt never gets to the outside of the pulley circumference)so the Gator does not get fully up to speed. The tech manual p499 suggests "If clutch has harsh engagement, erratic transition, hesitation, or clutch noise (chirping); perform primary clutch lubrication." There is no noise or hesitation; it just does not seem to close completely some of the time. Is it possible to lubricate the clutch without removing it from the engine, if so how do I do it? Or is this an indication that I need to replace the clutch? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First thing I would do is remove the belt then the three bolts holding the cover on and look inside and see if there is anything out of place. The rollers could be shot or a fly weight could be hanging up. Push the movable sheave in and see if it snaps back, there is a spring in it that may be broken. The only thing on the clutch that should be lubed is the rollers. But if they have flat spots on them and the Gator has that much time on it the inside bushing is probably shot and a new clutch is in order. On the other hand if everything looks ok inside there could be another problem. The driven clutch could be hanging up and not letting the drive clutch close all the way or the belt may be worn and too thin to go all the way up the drive clutch. ....
