Have JD 320 tractor lawnmover with Kawasaki FD590V engine. After warming up, in the range of 1 - 10 min. engine just dies abruptly. Replaced the carburator, seems to be getting fuel. Any idea if there are any senors or electrical components that can cause this? No manuals. Otherwise everything works, just seems to quit at random intervals.
Any hints as what could be causing it?
Thanks!

Yuri

It sounds more like you have a defective ignition module or a bad coil. Will it start up immediately after stalling or do you have to wait for it to cool down? ....

I changed the coil. It needs to wait for a while to restart.
I was hoping to find at least schematic on the web, but all I see is the offer on service manual. I guess I would have to get one. Service center would take 2 weeks to get to the tractor. We need it now :-(

I don't know if this is a magneto type ignition system. My walk behind tiller stopped abruptly as I was idling it across the yard this spring.

I took out the spark plug, connected it back to the spark plug and placed the plug base in good contact with the engine head. Pulling the engine through produced no spark in the plug gap. I removed the flywheel cover and cleaned the sensor and magnet plug and also took removed rust and scale around the circumference of the flywheel. Then I got spark and the tiller started. It would be good it your problem is as simple to fix.

Check the vent on the gas cap. Will it run with gas cap removed? Seems simple, but happens all the time with tractors/mowers/motorcycles.

check:

gas tank cap ( it must be vented )

fuel shutoff celenoid ( these can be defective)

coils/ignitors ( they sometimes only fail when hot )

check fuel tank for debris ( just the other day we found a corncob in the gastank on a customers 445 garden tractor, it would die when fuel level became low enough for the floating cob to be sucked onto the end of the pick-up tube).

good luck

Eureka,
found the problem! Turned out to be electrical problem. Some "mechanic" disconnected the seat switch and jumpered it with piece of junk wire, which would have intermittent contact. Sometimes it conducted, sometimes not.
Thanks for pointers, now happy John Dear :-)
