Fluid leaks around the 4 wheel drive shift lever on my JD 750. Does anyone know if the seal is on the outside of the lever housing? Or, does the housing need to be removed to replace the seal?

I don't think I am going to be very helpful here. Probably somebody who knows 750's will comment. The 4wd lever on my Ford 1710 goes into a cylinder across the top of the top differential cover. I wouldn't expect the level to get a lot of exposure to oil sling, but there probably is a seal on the shaft.
Sometimes minor oil seals can be removed and replaced without removing a shaft, but it probably would take a manual determine a procedure. The problem with my manual is that 4wd is treated as an afterthought and divided between the differential and front axle sections. I took a quick scan through my manual and couldn't find an exploded parts diagram or description. Hope a 750 manual is better.
One thing I would do if you haven't already done so is lower the 3ph and retract any other hydraulic cylinders and then check the hydraulic/TX oil level. An overfilled reservoir might cause leakage.

To replace the inner seal around the shifter shaft you have to remove the housing. Don't loose or forget the detent spring or the leaver will slip between 4 and 2. ....
