How do I restart a diesel motor after it has been run out of fuel.I tried taking the fuel lines loose and cranking the motor.What else can I try?

C.L., you need to say what that diesel engine is. Is the fuel filter full? Some have a bolt you can loose until fuel runs out to fill the fuel filter (like my B7100 Kubota), and there was another bleeder bolt at the injection pump. On some, but not all, diesel engines, you have to loosen the line at each injector, turn the engine over with the starter until all the air is expelled and only fuel comes out, tighten it back down, then go to the next injector (next cylinder) and do the same thing until you've bled each one. Be sure the kill switch is activated so the engine doesn't try to start while you're doing this. On some engines that means closing the throttle lever all the way, on others that means pulling out a kill switch, etc. Hope this helps, but I'd really need more information to say for sure. ....

As far as I know, Bird's note desribes the best way to do it. I'll just add that the filter on my Ford has two bleeders on the bowl, and there's one on the injection pump. An owner's manual is a good thing to have. A surprisingly few bubbles will stop an engine. You just have to persist, and robably use a batery charger to keep cranking. ....

Look carefully at the kind of "kill switch" you have, if it is a mechanical style, like the 'old' tractors have, a pull knob in the dash area. It is connected to a valve in the injector pump, when you pull the knob, it opens the valve and the injectors will NEVER get any fuel pressure no matter how long you crank the engine over. Just crank the engine over as normal, if the engine 'kicks' a little it will help the process IMMENSELY since the starter usually rolls the engine over at the minimum speed req'd. to start at the best of times. Just stay well clear of the belt and fan while doing this. The other thing you can do is try spraying a little WD-40 into the intake while someone cranks the engine form you, (NEVER use ether, i.e. quick-start on a diesel) if you are lucky the engine will run on this and it will bleed the air out for you. If that doesn't work, and only as a LAST resort, try bump starting it by towing it SLOWLY behind another vehicle, preferably another tractor. Best of luck. ....
