Hi, guys. Been reading your site for some time. There seem to be some knowledgeable individuals keeping tabs on it. Here's my question. My family has approximately 60 acres on very hilly terrain. Currently there are two small orchards app 2 acres each, 3 pastures 3 acres each, 20 acres wooded, 3 homesites with yards-2-3 acres, one pond and several streams and springs, and the rest in crops. Currently have a 45hp 3910 Ford w/ app 400 hours, Ford 9-n, and a JD 318 w/ dozer blade and 3 point. We would like to condense down to 1 machine to do all the mowing, bushhogging, logging, etc. Would also like to have a loader to help clear some wooded areas and clean out the pond once in awhile and move gravel. Most of our 3 point equipment is class 1 and 2. We've been considering a 4wd 30-35 hp compact w/loader and bar or turf tires to replace all machines. Is this a viable option? If so please reccomend some machines. Would like to keep cost in the >$15K range(keep dreamin' right?) Any advise is appreciated. Bear in mind I would like to be able to tow behind my old 1-ton chevy. Thanks.

Hi Wayne,It sounds like you have the right idea to consolidate. The 4 wheel drive on a newer tractor will certainly be helpful on hilly terrain. Caution!!! I have rolled a compact tractor on a hillside and it is not a pretty sight. Protect yourself, adjust the rear wheels as far apart as they will go, use a ROPS and seatbelt and know your limits! I don't know if one machine will do all the work you may have. Have you considered getting a small "cat" to handle the road, pond work or tree stump removal? With the acres you are working and all the different jobs to do, a compact tractor with a loader may have a hard time doing it all. ....

Steve, would you care to tell us more about how you rolled your compact tractor? I would like to hear it, probably others would like to hear it also. Obviously you were fortunate to live and tell about it, but did you suffer any lasting injuries? What were the conditions/circumstances when it happened? Thanks.... ....

The crawler idea has been on my mind for a couple of years. I am some distance from a maintenance facility that can handle that kind of equipment. One of our issues has been concern that a compact 4wd w/loader won't be able to perform as well as our current 3910 ford. The Ford weighs around 4800lbs and will take a 3000lb lift loader. Issue is it is too heavy to finish mow with and too big to switch the tires around on for different purposes. Another problem is with the oversized rims and tires it is 9ft wide. Don't have a trailer that big. Seems like the compacts are more versatile but wonder how they will hold up to doing the 3910's work. Anybody switched to smaller machines and been happy?If we do make the switch what flavor is reccomended? We have a boomer dealer 1 mile away, the boys in green about 30, orange is close to 50. The twin pumps on the JD sound good, How do they compare to the boomers for loader applications? Thanks for the advice. ....
