I am having a problem moving my TC40D form 4WD to 2WD to move it on the highway. Am I missing something. The owners manual really doesn't give much in the way of instructions. Since I use the tractor for Bush Hog, finish mowing operations for over 140 acres, it is not normally a problem as I have hills and other obsticles. However, I need to move the tractor about two miles to another location a couple times a year and have difficulaty in getting the tractor into only two wheel drive operations.
Any help is appreciated.

If it has gears, check that there's free travel at the top of the clutch pedal. Check tire pressures and maybe set them consistent with a load chart for the tires. If it has a loader, lift the front wheels off the ground (that usually does it) or maybe try backing up a bit or drive it over very loose soil.
The problem likely is 'axle wind-up.' Front and rear axle final drive ratios (including the tires) are slightly different, and the front tire rotation leads the rear by a few percent. The front tires have to slip a bit, which means that driving in 4wd on high traction surfaces places a lot of stress on the front drive). Things like mismatched tire sets, the wrong tire pressures can affect axle lead. With too much lead the axle is 'wound-up.' Shifting geared ranges and disengaging 4wd's becomes difficult. That's why lifting the front tires usually works.

I have a TC45D, and sometimes I find it difficult to disengage the 4WD as well; I end up going forward or reverse slightly, while pulling back on the 4wd lever...hope this helps. ....

Most 4WD CUT's have this problem, it is IMHO, a combination of lack of using the shifter and the design of the drive-train (lead/lag, etc., as Tom mentioned).
Try this method to minimize friction or load against the gears;
Stop the tractor on a flat level area.
Ensure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
Put the transmission in neutral.
Try shifting between 2WD & 4WD.
If it doesn't go, try putting the tractor in forwards and pull ahead slightly.
Without braking, shift into neutral and try shifting between 2WD & 4WD again.
If this still doesn't work, and only if, and your machine is equipped with a FEL and hydro, lift the front tires just clear of the ground, then with range selector in low, reverse ever so slightly while trying to shift between 2WD & 4WD.
This should take enough load off the drivetrain to allow the shift.
Best of luck. ....

The other posters' information is consistent with my experience on my TC45 with gear/shuttle shift.
Shift from 4 to 2 while you are still on dirt. If you are on pavement, already, the drive train wrap-up is going to make it hard.
Generally, I can shift to neutral with my 12X12 shuttle shift and then I can move out of 4WD easily. ....
