Finally took the plunge and bought my 1240, along with a 1246 loader and Rhino SE5 rotary cutter about 3 weeks ago. Since then I have done about 12 hrs of pasture mowing and 4 hours of loader work. Changed tires from Turf to R4 (industrial), which made quite a difference especially for loader work.Would like to hear from other 1240 users about their experience.

I bought a 1240 last August with a 1246 loader, a Bush Hog Rotary Mower, and a
Bearcat Chipper. I am getting ready to build a house in a 30 acre woods and have used the 1240 about 65 hours and have had no trouble at all. I have the AG tires. I just recently bought a Kelley Back Hoe which seem to work very well. ....

Larry, I have a 1250 with a 1246 loader and I was wondering how do you like your backhoe attachment? I was interested to see how powerful it could be with a compact tractor? ....

Martin, I also have a MF 1250-4. I don't know anything about the Kelly backhoes, but I have a MF 1217. It is a very good hoe. It has a lot of power. Not to long ago I dug 2400' of 16" wide ditch. The depth varied from 2'to 4'depending on what I was putting in each branch. Every one of the contractor on site was inpressed at how it dug. The dirt was hard packed red clay with rock. In one area you could look in the ditch and see three waves of 6" rocks that I had dug through. I have been real happy with it. JerryG ....

I purchased a Kelley 15A at a local dealer who had it setting around for 2 years for $4000.00. It seems to work very well so far as I have not used it much yet. ....

Does the Kelly have a subframe? My 1217 does. I can take it on or off in about 15 minutes. I will have that down to about 8-10 minutes in the next 3-4 weeks. That's because my dealer didn't put the hose connections where you could get to them very well. I have already bought the hoses to put it where it will be easy to get to and also a switch valve so that I don't have to reconnect the power beyond. I will be able to just disconnect and switch the valve the other way. JerryG ....

Jerry, thanks for the info on the 1217 backhoe. I bought my tractor online from tractorsmart.com. I am looking at a used 1210 with a mowing deck for 9,0000. The models have changed abit since the 1210 and I was wondering if it was a fair price?

Markus, is the MF1240 able to handle a 5 foot Bush Hog?
I am in the process of looking at brush mowers and the 5 foot will exceed the tractors width. Will the tractor handle mowing chores at slow speeds and moderate grass/brush?
Your input would be appreciated.

Welcome to our little corner of the 'net!!
I'll jump in and answer, the original post in now more than a decade old and they may not respond.
A MF1240 is 'rated' at ~30hp at the crank and ~23hp at the PTO. Please note the word "rated". It's a pet peeve of mine, almost all manufacturers use IMHO a sneaky way to rate them, they take a bare engine, bolted to a test stand and under perfect conditions and run it. That's the horsepower 'rating'. No clutch, not trans. gears, nothing. In the real world, your tractor is probably more like 25hp at the engine and 18hp at the PTO.
Sorry, rant over.
I would say in very moderate grass, yes, your unit will run a 5' bush hog. But, you will need to be very mindful of engine lugging, the clutch, the temperature, the weight (tipping or light front end) and the handling of the tractor.
BTW, what part of the Province are you in?
Best of luck. ....

Thanks in advance. ....

I'm about 3 hours northeast of you, near Lake Simcoe.
The mower size is a coin toss, in heavy stuff the tractor will like a 4' unit a lot better, BUT, other than the first pass you can always just move over a bit and cut less than 5' per pass. This gives you the option to use the full 5' in light stuff though.
The other consideration though is price & availability, 5'ers are really common, you will likely pay as much, maybe more for a 4' unit than you would for a 5' unit.
Best of luck. ....
