My B20 has a crushed hydraulic line just before the front mounted pump inlet. It appears that it would be restricting flow by about 50%. What impacts would this be having on either the Loader, Backhoe or drive hst ???
Thanks!!

LITTLE or REDUCED FLOW EQUALS SLOW OPERATION. FIX IT QUICK BEFORE SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS. ....

Stop, fix it now, or you'll probably buy a pump too from cavitation, pumps without enough oil don;'t last long. ....

It certainly should be fixed. Some typical symptoms that damage is being done is if there is a buzzing or rattling sound from the pump, the oil gets hot or it becomes foamy. If none of things are apparent the restriction may not be enough to cavitate oil in the pump and the tractor may be OK for limited light duty use before repairs, but no guarantees that use won't do some damage. ....

I guess this is why it is important to determine if any cavitation is occuring.
In a closed system cavitation means that the hydraulic oil must vaporize into small bubbles. As soon as the vacuum on the oil decreases, in the pump the bubbles collapse. The small bubble, as the vapor pressure of the oil is high, needs a lot of heat to form. It extracts it from the surrounding oil. As the bubble collapses the heat is returned in a small pulse of heat and pressure.
This pits the surfaces in the pump and can quickly do considerable damage. The process is similar to what happens in a sonic bath, like those used to clean jewelry. Note that they never want to leave your rings in it any longer than necessary.
I worked on sono chemistry for a time.
This is a lot different than entrained air in the system. ....

The notion of bubbles eroding steel always mystified me. Never the less I have a picture of the results of pump cavitation that shows a dished out area on the cavity wall almost a quarter of its width. I've also heard that coolant cavitation in some diesels is sufficient to cause perforations in water jackets. Again pressure differential is the cause. High-energy sound waves made by the engines create high and low pressure zones. Coolant that is already near its boiling point boils in areas low pressure. For this reason it's good to change coolant every two years. Engines that are highly prone to coolant cavitation often use an additive that reduces cavitation.
The idea of a cavitating pump as kind of a heat pump that transfers energy from one place to another never occurred to me. Thanks for the comment.
