Opportunity to buy B5100 with Gannon & bucket. Barn queen with about 800 hrs. Current owner just took it in trade. Can't find much info on this model. He says he doesn't know how to engage 4WD (and neither do I), but all else works well, except need seat upholstery. I will see it tomorrow and will have to buy or let go to another buyer in Calif.

Is this considered a "grey market" tractor?
Kubota B5100
Years produced: 1978 - 1984
Engine: 12 hp [8.9 kW]
PTO (rated): 10 hp [7.5 kW]
Variants:
B5100DT: 4WD
B5100E: 2WD
That's all I could find on a quick search...
Good luck! ....

Thanks. I don't think it is "grey market" and really don't care as long as it does the job. I was hoping that someone had actual experience with this model and could at least tell me how to engage 4WD. Also, what to look fao as I will have to make a snap decision on the purchase. ....

LewShaw,
I don't know what "job" you have in mind for it, as it's only rated at 12 horsepower. Most garden tractors have much power than this.
Engaging the 4-wheel drive should be quite simple. You should find two shift levers between your feet, possibly three.
One of these levers is for selecting the proper gears in the transmission.
The other should engage and disengage the 4-wheel drive.
If you find a third lever, it is most likely a rear differential lock.
If there is a 4th lever, it will be likely be for engaging a creeper gear......if this option was even available on that tractor.

Thanks, Joel
I would use it on our mini-farm to clean our horse stalls, load manure and do some finish grading.
Several sites list the HP as 12, 13 and 15???
I have a Craftsman gas tractor with 28hp and it is worthless for anything but cutting the grass, but these diesel Kubota's are capable of a lot more. ....

LewShaw,
I've seen several B5100s over the years. My old boss, down in Georgia had one, but I'm dating myself by telling you how long ago that was......1981.
It's a very simple and reliable little tractor. You're right....it is much more capable than a Walmart-type garden tractor.
You should have no trouble figuring out what the various levers do. Work with it on level ground, and at low speeds, and low RPMS, until you figure out how to engage and disengage the 4-wheel drive, diff lock, etc. It's not complicated at all.
I don't know how much you're going to pay for the thing, but I'm guessing that even with the loader, you should be able to pick it up for less than 2000 dollars.

The only reason I bring up "grey market" is the availability of parts, of which i have no personal experience, but have heard stories...no offense meant. ....

LewShaw,
Kubota engines, like most foreign makes, are rated by the Kilowatts produced. The conversion to horsepower is often rounded up, or rounded down. This power conversion results in some confusion.
The Kubota engine in the B5100 is rated somewhere between 12 and 13 horsepower.
1 horsepower is equal to .7456999 kilowatts
Therefore, an engine rated at 17 kilowatts will produce 12.67 horsepower.
Some people will round this number down, because it doesn't produce 13 horses. Others will round it up, because it's closer to 13 than it is to 12hp.
I don't how to properly round off the horsepower rating, but I'm going to assume that it wouldn't be right to give it a higher rating than it actually has.......due to misleading advertising. Therefore, I'd give it a 12hp rating.
One thing for sure.....it doesn't have 15 horses.

Thanks, more good info!
So far, I have learned that the B5100 was made in the late 70's to mid 80's. It is a good basic, bullet-proof 12hp tractor and most parts can still be found as needed. Considering the value of the hydraulics, bucket and gannon, at $2500 delivered, the tractor itself is almost free!
It should do a much better job on my horse stalls than the current shovel and wheelbarrow! If it passes inspection tomorrow, I'll be the proud new owner! ....

LewShaw,
I really fouled up earlier. I converted the kilowatts to horsepower going in the wrong direction. Sorry about that. I got it all backasswards.

The 4WD lever is on the right side of the gear case by the parts manual. It should do a great job for cleaning out your stalls. Lee ....

I did NOT buy the B5100. What a POS! It was NOTHING like described and yes, it would not go into 4WD.

LewShaw,
I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get a tractor, but I'm glad to know that you didn't settle for that one.
You'll find one eventually. Be patient.
About the time you find the tractor you want, you'll find another just like it, a day later, for about 1/2 the money. That must be a law, or something. hehehe.
