I have been looking at compacts for awhile now, and was really leaning towards the 4000 ten series. I read on another tractor board the these tractors have been showing lots of shavings in the transmission during the first service interval. These do not seem to be normal break-in shavings but shavings from the manufacturing process. John Deere thinks it is OK but I heard from owners who are not happy with this lack of cleaning the housing before assembly. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Craig

I think it might be more of a consumer thing where the thought might be worse than the reality. There's a good chance that JD is right from an engineering perspective. Shavings that actually circulate are going to end up in a screen or filter pretty fast. I don't imagine that many shavings would actually get caught up in any bearings or gear faces and they'd be softer than bearing surfaces anyway.
Even if that's all true, I'd still probably feel better if the shavings were cleaned up during the manufacturing process since it wouldn't leave me wondering what else in QC might be wanting.

In a recent first service on my Kubota I found metal shavings on the intake screen. Seems as if finding some amount is normal.
On another note, the dealer down the street says that the factory letters on the 4x10 series are starting to pile up like they did on the 4000 series. He told me that he has even seen fixes to the fixes. ....

Mark, could you elaborate more on what problems are showing up? It might give us 4x10 guys something to keep our eyes on. Thanks

Hi Billy. He didn't elaborate, other than to say when he complained to the Deere area rep about using the consumer for field testing, the rep gave him the "we are green" speech and told him he had better be thankful that he had the privilege.
That aside, I will ask some questions and let you know what I find out.
There are two dealers within driving distance that sell both Deere and Kubota. Both tell me kubota out sells Deere 10 or 20 to 1. They have both told me that they are in conflict with Deere for not "pushing" the product and I am beginning to see a big national advertising campaign by Deere in outdoor/sportsman's magazines and on TV.
All signs are that they have a weaker market share these days. ....

When I bought a 4100 two year ago, I had a few months of slow steering, etc. which turned out to be manufacturing shavings. My whole assembly was cleaned and the final result felt like a gain of 4-5 horsepower. The problem was cured.
The second year, when things felt a little slow, I cleaned the screen of the accumulated shavings and will continue to do so. I suspect that on some models the hydro pump(s) do not have enough excess capacity to cover for slight restrictions in the passages or screen.
