Just purchased 5.5 acres in SC, all grass/pasture. Looking at building a barn and acquiring 3 horses. I need something to mow, move hay, feed, spread manure, etc with. Is a compact tractor a better choice than a garden tractor? What hp and attachments should I be looking at?

With five acres and horses you are way out of the garden tractor arena. How many acres will you have to mow and how often? ....

Definitely in the compact category, probably in the 25 to 30 hp range. At 20 to 25 PTO hp, you can run a 5' rotary cutter (brush hog). I run a 6' behind my JD 950 with 27 PTO hp. Definitely get a front end loader, the most useful attachment you will have.
Are you planning on small square bales or large round? If large round, you will need even more tractor.
Box blades are great for moving/leveling dirt. Straight blades are good for leveling.
Wish list; post hole auger, 3 pt tiller, landscape rake, backhoe, etc. (the list never ends) ....

A tractor to work from would be the BX Kubotas. That would give you a small end to work from. I don't think that we have to look over 30 engine horsepower to fill your needs. ....
