Anyone know of a source for new seats for JD 950 (other than the JD dealer)? I have found several web sites that offer JD seats, but not for the 950 or other older compact series.

Bill, Try a place called Sooner Sales, the link is listed below, I bought a seat for my 950 from them just a few months ago. I also placed a picture link below that should take you right to the seat. It was Stock #ACSHB1 $55.95 with FREE SHIPPING. It is not a perfect fit, meaning you need to fiddle with the mounting brackets on the seats to get the pin through. I mounted the brackets, left them loose, set the seat in place, installed the pin and then tightened everything up. The mounting brackets will wind up being at an angle rather than straight but the seat works (tilts) and feels great. The Sooner people were great to deal with, very helpful and real friendly. God Luck. Mark ....

As you might have suspected, Yanmar and JD use the identical seat. It sure is a nice one....nice steel pan, quality foam and vinyl, and a somewhat higher back than a universal type seat. The JD850 and 950 are the same....in fact, I think that the JD650 and 750 are the same as the JD850/950 too; although I don't know that for sure. I do know that this seat not only fits but is identical to the seats that were stock on all US Yanmars. Last month I bought an 850 seat to put on my Yanmar 336D. I like that Yanmar seat and frankly don't care if does cost a bit more. If it is different in any respect from the last one I bought in 1980 then I can't find it.....Hmm....It is different in one respect; The JD seat costs less than the Yanmar seat does.....:-( ....

Roger, I couldn't agree more. Nice Seat, I am very happy with it. I even saved my old seat so I could put it back on for the winter. I figured that way I wouldn't sit my but down on cold vinyl, cracking it and wrecking my new seat. Mark ....

I'm sorry I don't agree with Roger, the seat on my JD 750 was a piece of junk. I looked at the JD replacement which was the same and over priced. For me the seat placed all my weight on the front of my thighs. I got numerous heat rashes in the summer. I purchased a yellow seat from Northern Tool, but had to fabricate a mount from the old seat frame. The yellow was cooler, had better weight distribution and looked great on the tractor. The vinyl on the JD seat was poor. I attributed the rash partly do to poor plasticizers in the vinyl. Believe me I am one of the couple of dozen people in the nation that know coated vinyl fabrics.
The seat on the my JD 955 is much better, ths may be the same as the 950. This seat is on a slide to adjust the length. The 750 is fixed.

I probably neglected to mention that years ago I made up a set of brackets that move my seat back about an inch, up about half an inch, and change the tilt by a few degrees. I figure that the original seating positon provided by the manufacturer is just an estimate in need of fine tuning. ....

Inexpensive does not mean cheap. Expensive does not mean quality. The seat on the JD 750 (85) was cheap and poorly set up, but relatively expensive from JD. I looked at a number of alternatives that were less expensive. Even an industrial seat from JD (USA) was better than the Yamar (JD) and less money. I finally went to Northern and took a chance on the yellow seat they had at (~$70). Much better seat and lower price.
I think the problem here is that the year of the tractor = model of seat. One of the reasons I went to the JD dealer to look at the seat offered that I assumed there was no way that they would not of upgraded the junk that was original equipment. Wrong !!! JD models that were continued in production longer must have a better design. I have no problems with the 99' JD 955 seat. The seat I purchased from Nothern is like the 4000 series seats. ....
