I'm perennially shopping for a new tractor and I really appreciate this board and Carver as an outstanding resource. Does anyone know of a JD dealer that has a web page where prices and features can be compared like Carver's? I'm floating between green and orange, but prices here in the Pacific Northwest seem REALLY high compared to what I see here. What are shipping costs like to the Seattle area?

I seriously considered buying out of state and having the tractor shipped. Shipping negated the sales tax savings and I found a local dealer that beat the "carver" price. Shop around, shipping is not prohibitive, especially if the locals are higher priced than the out of state dealers. Just like a car warranty - you can buy wherever you want, the company stands behind the product. I bought my last 2 auto's over the WEB, and would do it again. ....

One of the two purchases involved a trade. A local dealer handles the paperwork, delivery and worked in the trade. This is the only way to buy a car without the hassles of haggling. I knew what I was going to pay before I even went for a test ride. ....

I plan on selling my B7100 rather than trading it in when I buy. Our sales tax rate is around 9%, so buying out of state can make a significant difference if shipping isn't too prohibitive. ....

If you are selling a tractor that you have depreciated on your tax return you may want to rethink the trade route. The example i was shown by an accountant was as follows. you are buying a tractor for 10000. you can sell your old fully depreciated tractor for 5000 outright or trade it for 4000. If you you do the accounting right on your return you need to show a 5000 gain ( you must pay income tax on that gain even though it seems like there is no difference on the transaction and the amount depends on your bracket). I you are in the 28% bracket that amounts to 1400 due on the sale of the depreciated asset and you depreciate the 10000. but if you trade it, you move the depreciation basis of the new tractor to 6000 and pay no gain. if you look at straight out of pocket you end up paying 400 more for the outright sale of the used tractor even though you took in 1000 more. This is just an example, and it may not be correct, you should check with your tax advisor on the consequences. just my 2 cents. ....
