Art - the reasoning behind 5' is the width of the jd755 that it will be pulled with. But you raise a good point about the width when angled. How much is a rake normally angled? If 45 deg. then I guess I should go with a 6' which will have a projection of 51". Would the 6' be too wide when using it square?

I agree with Paul, there is a learning curve for the operator to get used to the controls and how to ease into some of the motions. I also agree that when it starts to bounce, just stop moving it and restart. I don't have that many hours on my 'hoe but when I first started I jerked the thing all over the place. Now I can operate it very smoothly and with a nice even pattern. Then, all of a sudden I'll loose the rythm and send the thing into the stabilizer shield. When this happens, it usually means its time to take a little break. As far as problems, the swing circuits often have restrictors to slow down the movement. It is unlikely that these are worn open but anything is possible. - norm

I am not familiat with this unit but I have the JD collection system on my 755. It uses a separate gas powered engine for the blower and has 13 bushel capacity. Front weight is definitely advisable on my setup because grass/leaves get heavy and although you might not actually need the weight, the machine is clearly out of balance and it bounces like crazy.

When I get my blades sharpened by the local sharpening shop, they come back *VERY* sharp - you could cut yourself on them. These are going to cut much better and more efficiently - especially if you don't have rocks.

There are, or course, different size alternators. Mine generates about 40A. I am quite sure if I threw a winch on it I would at the very least burn out the rectifying diodes. As previously suggested, I would use a separate battery, probably a deep cycle one, and put it on charge after use. My $.02

OK, I have finally got the time to rebuild my JD 7 backhoe control valves - thanks to all for their input. My next question is this - the unit is 15 years old. I bought it used and the hoses "look" ok except for corrosion at the connectors. Should I bite the bullet and replace all of the hoses or should I just brush down the connectors and paint them? Also, is there a less expensive alternative than buying the hoses from JD? I was contemplating getting stock length hoses from Northern and just dealing with the extra loop. Is this a good idea? Also, hoses on the 7 are 1/4" ID and the hoses from Northern would be 3/8" (same 3/8 NPT connectors). I am sure the larger hose wouldn't cause a hydraulic problem, but would there be a mechanical one for clearance where they route throught the unit? Thanks for the continued advice!!

I have a #7 on a 755 and it can bounce the tractor around pretty well. The 955 is bigger, but not that much. I would be concerned about the stress.

I'm no expert, but the fact that the fuel bowl is empty suggests to me that the fuel pump may be the culprit. You say you've checked the delivery capacity, but the problem is obviously intermittent. If not the pump itself, perhaps wiring to it. Could an air leak on the suction side of the pump be a possible cause? I'll raise that to the board for someone else to comment.

I use the 50" on my 755 with absolutely no problem. I could believe the 60" would be fine. Check the weight and go slow and shallow through hard ground, as previously suggested.

While I don't know of problems with the new axle, does she plan on using a front snowblower or broom? What is the downside of having the new axle put on? If there is new, new one - have them replace it again.

As a suggestion to try to isolate the problem, I would drain the oil, replace the filter (just because it is always a good idea) and fill with the specified volume of oil. The whole situation you describe could very well be caused by an over-full crankcase. This, as a starting place, will at the very least rule that out so that you can begin trouble shooting from a known baseline.

David - thanks for the info, I thought it might have been a bent rod not thinking that a slight bend in the guide pipe could also do it. When I get ambitious, I will reverse the guide pipes side to side and see if the problem moves with the guide.

I see the reference in the book to the 31" rear tires. I checked my machine and it has 33x12.5-15 on the the back and 23x8.5-12 on the front. This is the size on the 855 (MFWD standard) and so I suspect that is the reason for the difference.

Re. helicopters, I once worked with some people that did some contract work for Sikorsky and their general description of a helicopter was "a loose collection of parts, flying in formation".

JeffM, I am in NY too and went around and around trying to get the straight word on whether it is covered or not. There is a clause in the NYS policy that says something to the effect of 'equipment for personal use and maintenance of the residence that is not covered by DMV regulations'. The point of contention is, apparently, that no one will commit to what that means exactly. Some read it as long as the machine is not registered it is covered, some read it to mean that as long as the machine CAN be registered it is not covered because if you take it on the road it is governed by DMV regs. A riding lawn mower, for example, cannot be registered even if you wanted to. My agent recommended the first interpretation and dealing with it in court when the time comes, if necessary - just don't get someone hurt with it off your property or you'll be scr**ed. Let me know what you find out about registering it - DMV and insurance costs. That was the next step that I just never got around to. Another alternative is contractors' insurance but that is hellishly expensive if you aren't making money with the machine.

#1 is kerosene, #2 is diesel/fuel oil. I wouldn't expect a kerosene heater to run on #2. As far as the dye is concerned, it isn't going to affect the injector pump, but it just might mess up a wick. Diesel engines can run on both, #2 provides more HP, #1 gels at a much lower temp, therefore the trade-off for winter use. Additives can lower the gel temp of #2 without the loss of HP when mixing with (or using straight) #1. Hope this helps.

I moved up from a JD318 to a JD755 w/ 60" mid-mount, 4wd and turfs and have never regretted it. The size of the machine (similar to a 4100) is perfect for mowing, roto-tilling, snow removal, dirt removal, picking up leaves with a vacuum collector, etc. I've recently added a JD7 backhoe. There are times I wish I had a little more hp, but let's face it - one will always want a little more hp and the manueverability of this small compact is ideal for mowing around all of the trees.
