I am a new tractor owner and have a L3010HST with a Kubota BL9690 backhoe and FEL The backhoe has four controls for the arm/boom/bucket. Three of the four work fine. The fourth ( the one which operates the left/right swing and the up/down of the boom) moves erratically and is very sensitive to joystick pressure. My dealer says that I need more control on the sticks and nothing can be done to reduce this problem. Is this true? I'd appreciate any comments.

Possibly. The swing and boom are the fastest responding controls on most backhoes because the linkages are such that you get more boom movement for less cylinder movement. Try practicing with the engine rpm lowered to a high idle. This slows the response and gives you a chance to get the feel of the controls without the 'hoe jerking all over the place. I've been running mine for about 8 or 10 years now, and I'm still a little jerky once in a while when I break it out in the Spring. Also, when it gets to jerking on ya, instead of "chasing the controls" just let go and let everything come to a stop then start over. I don't know enough about hydraulics to say whether there might be a control adjustment that needs to be tweaked or not, but it's possible. ....

I agree with Paul, there is a learning curve for the operator to get used to the controls and how to ease into some of the motions. I also agree that when it starts to bounce, just stop moving it and restart. I don't have that many hours on my 'hoe but when I first started I jerked the thing all over the place. Now I can operate it very smoothly and with a nice even pattern. Then, all of a sudden I'll loose the rythm and send the thing into the stabilizer shield. When this happens, it usually means its time to take a little break. As far as problems, the swing circuits often have restrictors to slow down the movement. It is unlikely that these are worn open but anything is possible. - norm ....

Frank, I'm with Paul and Norm on this. I had operated TLBs and mini-excavators before, but still took some time to get used to the boom swing on my JD 48 backhoe. Key things: throttle back (I set my throttle at around 1200 RPM when using the backhoe) and ease the controls for the boom rather than just sending them like you would for the loader. Seems like it takes longer, but slow and easy is probably more efficient on these units. I still lose the "touch" occasionally, then I have to stop and slow down to get it back. ....

All good comments. I'll add that I started out running my hoe around 1500 engine rpm for the reasons mentioned. I developed some touch and rhythm (also mentioned) and now I run around 2000 rpm. Lower rpm's slow down all operations and it starts taking unacceptable long times to lift buckets out of deep trenches. Anyway, with a little practice you'll likely develop the tough to feather the swing controls to make smooth swings at higher rpm's. When I start jerking the swings, I too know it's time for a break. A comment that I heard, or maybe read in my hoe manual, is that it's good technique to dump the bucket against the top of the pile. Uncurling the bucket against the top of the pile is supposed shock the hoe less and also push the dirt over the backside of the pile and not back into the trench. I guess the same can be said for swings. I tend to sort of aim for the top of the pile on the swings. Brushing the pile with the bucket makes for nice smooth stops on swings. Unlike some operators, I don't try to raise the back wheels off the ground with the stabilizers. I just take most of the weight off the wheels. Sometimes the stabilizers compact the soil and put weight back on the wheels. Then, the hoe will bounce itself and the tractor around. I check the stabilizers every now and then. ....

Frank- all great advice! When I got my used hoe from the dealer it had very little power and I was going to send it BACK. The mechanic came out and adjusted a special control valve and the unit started to roar! as it is supposed to. So there is an adjustment for all hydralic units. If following the above advice doesn't work ( after lots of practise) get it adjusted. BTW owning the backhoe has been the most fun and I would rate it up with the FEL in terms of the best accessory to have. ....

Question? did the backhoe come with the tractor, or did you install it later, also how does it mount to the tractor.
I am a first time owner of a 4310 (six mo.) with loader, have been considering getting a backhoe, don't know how much trouble it would be or how much it will cost.
is yours a kubota backhoe or some other make, i can only find two models BL4690A and L4560. ....
