I have a 755 w/ the #7 backhoe and it is a good little machine but do stress little. I buried a 1000 gal oil tank this past summer and it took quite a while to dig the hole (but it sure beat doing it by hand). Depending on what you are going to do with it and what type of soil (i.e. rocks) you have it may work to get the larger bucket - I have the 13" which is only .75 cubic foot. You can do the arithmetic as to how long it will take to dig your hole. Cycle time is pretty slow and slower the deeper you go. By the time you get to the bottom of a 6' hole, round trip cycle time is getting around 20 seconds. It starts to feel like you are using a teaspoon. I don't want to leave the wrong feeling - I love the little machine but you need to have the correct expectation of what it can do. Also, it is not compatible with the mid-mount mower which means you will be jockeying them on and off if you need both. I will e-mail scanned specs, since I can't post them here.

When I use my tiller in my garden, I make multiple passes to get as deep as possible. This garden bed is well tilled from use over the years and after the first pass, the tiller sinks itself right down to the tine shaft.

You are going to have to step up the rpm's in several stages. I think you will find that it is not very practical to try to transfer 16hp with a belt between pulleys in a ratio of 7:1. The amount of surface on the small pulley engaged by the belt will not be enough to provide the power transmission that you are looking for. My two cents - looking forward to others' views.

One of those intermediate alternatives could be bio-diesel. There has been some good advances with it. It is renewable, grown from oil seeds of various sorts. The problems with it, as I understand, are: 1)its tendency to go bad - so greater care has to be given to its storage; and 2) reduced lubricating qualities.

Well, I did some searching to try to find something resembling a standard definition. Nothing specific to tractors, but I have found a few (and they were far between!) statements with regard to road vehicles. The consensus of these works, from various countries and the state of Texas, is that the turning radius is to the outside wheel. Does that apply to the specification used for tractors as well? If I find anything, I'll let you know.....

A quick serach on the internet revealed this site. I don't know anything about them, but they have a First Choice mower for sale and their home page indicates they have a parts department. Maybe you can give them a call.

I can't comment on the 4000 series. But I have a 1994 JD755 and a 1987 JD7 back hoe that goes on it. I have purchased a few parts for the tractor, many more for the backhoe which I just completely overhauled. All of the new parts are identical to those that came off with the exception of one or two improvements. JD is known for making parts and documentation available for many, many years after the discontinuation of a line. My first question would be if the dealer is jury-rigging repairs to increase his margin? Although I have always found the parts available on short notice, they are expensive in many cases.

I have found that getting roots wrapped around the tiller has a distinct advantage - it gets them ripped out, ok maybe the hard way, but not the hardest way (by hand). So does anyone know if this will cause any damage if they are cleared off regularly?

When Bird mentions the amount of spread, I think he is referring to maximums. I have a cat. 1 hitch and routinely use an implement that is on the narrow side - a spread of only 20". As well as one on the wide side - 28". The point being, there is a lot of latitude on the sway chain adjustment. If you have 7/8" pins, I am sure your implements are cat. 1. I would be surprised if a cat. 0 machine would take a 5' mower. If you wanted to change the location of the mounts for ease of changeover so that you don't have to re-adjust the chains, there is nothing wrong with that in its own right.

Just one more point. It is my impression, and someone more knowledgeable should jump in if I am wrong, that machines with cat. 0 hitches often have PTOs that run at 1000 rpm. rather than 540 rpm. So, that is another issue to be aware of when converting cat. 0 implements to cat. 1.

ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE!! My little banter with TomG has prompted me to think that I don't really know what happens from hydraulic fluid injection either. We all see the warnings, but do any of us really understand the danger? I didn't. So I did a little research and found the article in the referenced link. Go to page 4 and read. I must say that I am a little shocked over the extent of damage that can occur. It is a little technical (medically) but I think most of us can get the gist of what they are saying.

Here are some highlights: gangrene, damage to nerves and blood vessels, if the fluid makes its way to a tendon or something similar with a sheath it can ride it quite a ways - there have been cases of injection at the finger and the required surgical removal of contaminated tissue extended all the way to the elbow.

I have one. It's ok. You have to realize up front that this is an $1100 unit and not $8000. It will chip 1"-2" stuff pretty well, but slowly (larger than that I call firewood anyway). It will also shred twigs, leaves, and the like. It is a fine unit for general yard work. I have used it to clean up from large trees felled and it works, but very slowly.

I just recently rebuilt my JD 7 backhoe. I was not happy with the service/price I was going to get from local hose dealers so I turned to the internet. What I found was www.hydraulichosefittings.com. I have no business interest here, I am just passing on the name of an outfit I wouldn't hesitate to do business with again. They were very helpful, timely and about 1/3 the cost of what I was able to find near me. Good luck.

3.8 liters to the gallon (US) = 3800 cc/gal. At 5.8 gal/min, that yields 22040 cc/min. Divide that by the rated rpm to get cc/rev. The rated rpm is the hard part, I would assume it is the engine speed required for PTO speed. So, for my 755, rated at 5.6 gal/min in the book (7 cc/rev on the pump) and a pto engine speed of 3200 rpm it comes out to: (5.6g/m * 3800cc/g) / 3200rpm = 6.65cc/rev which is pretty close. Lowering the rated rpm to 3000 in the calculation puts it just about square on.

A couple of years back I made the switch to heating oil for my JD755. Cost was not the main issue but a nice side benefit. For me, the convenience of dipping into my 550g tank rather than running to a station is the point. I use a good fuel additive with anti-gel components, which I would use anyway. It increases lubricity, stabilizes the fuel in case any moisture gets in, and ensures me that I am not going to gel up in the winter. I have had no problems burning this fuel.

Roger - no problems what so ever reassembling the valves. The backing washers for the o-rings where bent into cups - which is why the o-ring blew in the first place. There was so much of a cup that the o-ring just popped out. thanks again.

I'd like to get down to the fundamentals. I know the equations but still don't understand why a 20 hp gas engine has less torque than a 20 hp diesel. I know how they each work, but I don't really understand the diffence in their operational characteristics. Can someone please explain? thanks.

Well, you're right. I'll try to convince you to buy one of the three and here is why. You say that you are not mechanically inclined and the Kioti dealer is 100 miles away? You should inquire as to how much they will charge to haul the unit every time you want something done. I would strongly suggest you check good used at a local dealer with good service: you just might find what you are looking for. You can spread the cost somewhat by spreading the purchase of the implements. Box blades are used for spreading and leveling material (dirt, gravel, etc.)

There are o-rings between the valve sections. I'm not sure what you mean by a normal o-ring. Depending on the application they are made of different materials, they are different inside diameters and they are different thicknesses. My advice is to go and get replacement parts. Taking this apart and cleaning it all up is a reasonably big job. and there is no way to assume that the leak is coming from between the sections. It might be leaking out of the bottom seal and blowing out of the top of the return spring cup making it look like it is coming from between the valves. This is exactly what happened to mine. I would suggest pulling the valves apart and at least replacing the top and bottoms spool seal as well as the backing washers and retainers. On mine, these were cupped to the point where the o-ring just didn't seat in the groove any more. You have it apart, you might as well do it all - you'd really hate getting it all back together and then finding something else leaking.
