I dunno about the mulcher,but it seems ALL of the manufacturers are EXTREMELY PROUD of their finishing mowers.I can't see 2k in a mower.Heck I only paid 4.6k for the tractor so my mower will be almost half as much as the doggoned tractor!!!! But that being said,I guess the old adage applies,if ya wanna dance,ya gotta pay the fiddler.So I guess I'll work some overtime and buy me one,eventually...<br>Keith

I will tell ya this,though.I just bought a Yanmar 2500 grey and the steering was stiff.I greased it up and voila! easy steering.Now I agree with a loader that PS would be almost mandatory,BUT if you have a manual steering tractor,be sure that it's greased well and often and it will help!! I got that tidbit of info from my 66 year old father who can remember when there were manual steering cars only!!!

A lot!! Can't say how many gallons, but would guess about 30-40 gallons. The fluid level needs to be just above the top radius of the rim, or tube acutally. About 3/4 full.

Gary, not wanting to burst your bubble but... From what I have read on this board the pto powered chippers take a lot of hp, which you don't seem to have much of. Someone posted a rule of thumb that recommends about 8 (I think it was 8 anyway) pto hp per inch of material you want to chip. There was a sort of consensus on this that 25-30 hp was the minimum you would need to chip material that is 4-5

Stanley, I have zero experience with Cub's so maybe someone else can answer that one for you. Although, I would guess that NOT having a three point hitch would really be a huge disadvantage. The three point hitch gives you such a wide array of implements to use, I wouldn't even consider buying tractor that did NOT have one. That's my opinion though. I believe that all of the JD compact, utility, and farm tractors built in the 80's to present are diesel. Probably even earlier than that, but that goes before my time. I know that ones with Yanmar engines are diesel, anyway. As someone else said, the 650 is a 2 cyl. Yanmar All the others above it (meaning bigger) have three cylinder Yanmars. I think that most all of these are gear drive too. Not sure exactly when hydro started getting popular. Most of these built in the 80's have 4x2 (not counting reverse) speed transmissions meaning a total of 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse. They're really good tractors, though. Good luck!<br>Keith

Well fellas,I got disappointed today.I went to the bank and got the 6000,hooked up the 'ol 16 foot trailer,and went to take delivery.What a disappointment.Seat all ripped up,889 hours on the clock,someone had crashed it into a tree and mangled the hood all up,it didn't have any leaks,but it smoked pretty badly ( I thought anyway),and I heard a distinct gear whine from the rear end.And to top it all off the 3pt wouldn't stay up,you either had to bind the engine on the pump to keep it up or it fell pretty quickly. Also the deal changed. I would no longer get the brushhog with it but I would get two blades,a box and a very lightweight grader blade.Needless to say I am off to look at the grey market Yanmars. I am looking at a YM 2500 the clone of the JD 850. I can swing one of those for less than 5k and have a grand left for the finish mower.Thanks to all esp you Keith for the info.It was very useful. I have seen quite a few 2wd JD 650's w/no loader in SC in the $5k range, give or take about $800. Since the one you are looking at is 4wd, then you can probably add about $1000 for that. The control valve costs $600 new, so you might want to include maybe $300 for that. Or from another angle, you could subtract out the items you don't want in the deal. The mower is probably about a $700 item used, but I really don't have a clue as to how the dozer blade is worth. You didn't say if it had hydraulics or not, but I would guess that it does. I would say offer around $5800 for the tractor itself. If you go to low, you insult the seller. If you are in his low range, then you can always bargain your offer up to an agreeable amount. Personally, I don't think I would go above $6000 unless you just really want it bad enough (but that's mho). Just for comparison, I bought a nice '81 2wd 21hp JD 750 (977 hours and no loader) with a 4 foot disc harrow and a 4 foot bushhog last February for all of $5000. Good luck....<br>Keith

I looked at a few 850's before I bought an '81 750. The average price I saw in SC was right at $7000 for the the 850's, so I believe the quote you had was in line. If you can get him down some, all the better. That's pretty low hours for a tractor (probably) made in the '80's. Mine had 977 on it. I got my tractor, a 4 foot harrow, and a 4 foot bushog for $5000. It's a 2wd with no PS or loader, though. Good luck....<br>Keith

Just made a similar comment for the guy who had a Mitsu and was looking for a ROPS for it. Guess that guy doesn't want to pay the $900 bucks for the right one ordered through Mitsu., so he was looking for another ROPS (cheaper) that he could cut/weld/modify to fit his little Mitsu. For your info, ROPS are made to OSHA standards and they are magnafluxed, etc... to be extra strong. You start hacking on one and you may violate the design/integrity of the structure. Go ahead, how much is your life worth to you?? I wouldn't dare do anything to mine. <br>Keith

Folks, I stopped by my local JD dealer yesterday to pick up some parts I had ordered for my 750. I paid for them and then and wandered outside to admire (well, actually lust) the new JD's. Lo and behold, down at the end of the row of shiny new ones sat this really, really cherry looking JD 770. I made my way down there for a closer look and noticed it only had 28.3 hours on it. A demo? A trade-in? Well, I walked in and asked a saleman and he said it was a trade-in. A fellow had bought it and then realized he needed a bigger tractor, so he traded up. (The salesman also said he took a beating on the trade, are you suprised?) Well, the scoop is that this is a '98 JD 770 with only 28.3 hours on the meter. It is 2wd with gear drive. Not sure if it had PS or not. The price? This tractor is going for $9000! At least, that's the price he quoted me. If you live close enough, their phone number is 803-957-6642 (its Palmetto Lawn and Leisure in Lexington, SC) It's about 5 miles out of Columbia, SC on Hwy #378. That might not be the best price for one, but it is a cherry of a tractor! Man, why couldn't this one have shown up last February when I was looking for one??<br>Keith
