Hey Murf, Last spring my dad wanted to move back the brush border around my back yard. I guess 2acres isn't enough backyard for me to have to cut. Anyway, I locked the belly mower up, put the rotary cutter on, and away he went. 30minutes later I look out back and see my dad waving a mayday at me from behind the pond. Seems he finished expanding my back yard, and decided to add a new patch to it. Since we do cut the area behind the pond about twice each summer(when the pond is just a dry pit that is), there were tire marks that my dad decided to follow. Well, my little 2710 with turfs was in so deep by the time he realized the ground was a swamp and he was just spinning his wheels, that there was water over the axles. Guess who got to wade in with chains and a come along. Had to anchor it to a little 3" tree, drop the cutter, and shove 2x10 boards under the back wheels and lever the tractor up before we got it out. Killed the poor tree, came half out of the ground. Clean up was actually easy since it was so wet, but I'm not gonna do that again! And neither will my dad.

Well, I'm going to be looking for a 3pt blower for next year. Central NH, more snow than in any recent year (10+ I'd guess). The NH 7308 loader and Land Pride 72" rear blade work OK but not for the big storms. My neighbor with Kuboda B1700 and front mount blower bailed me out 3 times so far this winter. The banks on the sides have set and are 3' high. The blower just disperses everything into the woods. Gone, bye-bye, no more snow...

Gill, compact tractor owners are not exempt from Darwin's theory of natural selection. Operating these machines in less than a thoughtful manner can result in some form of penalty (see Murph's latest on "Sticky..."). No matter what you buy, you'll have to accept its limitations, and not excede them. You'll be amazed at the versatility of the compact, but it may not be the right tool for the job you have in mind. I, like most people, don't have a built-in inclinometer - what looks like so many degrees of incline may in fact be much more. This is why you should mow up, and down, a steep slope whenever possible. "Ridge Running" is not for the faint of heart. Your homework has narrowed you down to several excellent machines, have you asked the dealers for an on-sight demo? Most dealers will be glad to let you try running the machine at your place, under their supervision, and you'd be surprised at how much you'll learn about the dealer and his product from this experience. This could help you narrow the field in a hurry. Longer wheelbase machines have some advantages over compacts, Cat D11's have some advantages over D6's, where do you draw your line? My best suggestion to you is "try before you buy."

I just got my new 4300 hydro,r4's,folding rops,and 430 loader...I'm about to have more fun than a barrel of monkeys! The better half even got on the "Green Machine" and ran it for a while..Glad she liked it because that's the real reason we got it..Now she can mow while I play "superintendent".I mean...Sit in the lawn chair and drink beer!I will have a hard time getting her of the tractor now.

I mowed for about 5 years, haven't had any overtime at day job,
thinking about getting back into it. I started at $35/hour with
a 6 foot unit stopped at $60. I also had a min. charge of $75
I am north of Detroit, Heard of one place charging $75 with a 5'.
Get the insurance and safety features. If you show up with
nice equipment (truck,tractor,trailer...) no matter where, I think
you should get <$50, drive an 8n two miles to get to the job, >$40

There is much to look at on those tractors,does it have the power shift or syncro transmission? Roger is right about the improvements in the 20 series. Depending on your uses you did not say as to gas or diesel but the later needs a BIG heater to start below 30 degrees. At the hours has it been rebuilt yet?

That sounds like a real good price. I paid about $21,000 a year ago for an L3710 HST with 60" heavy duty bucket, folding ROPS and a cheap box blade. I know the HST adds about $1,000.

By the way, I was planning on the manual transmission also until my wife decided she wanted the HST. Now I wouldn't have anything else, it's so much easier to make direction changes and small adjustments in speed. Also, if you have any inexperienced operators driving the tractor HST is MUCH safer.

This one got me thinking, so I pulled the manual out. It says, "IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to differential, do not engage differential lock at high speeds." It then says, "stop or slow tractor down" to engage differential lock. So, it sounds like the safest method is to stop, engage the diffreential lock and keep your foot on it. Then use the gas, and move your foot off the differential lock. The lock will release itself when normal traction has returned. It sound similar to using the 4WD except than I disengage the 4WD manually. JonB

Aren't they nice tractors, though? There was a used one for sale locally parked by the front of an "Estate Farm". It had the cab with filtered air - heated and cooled of course. No implements except the most elaborate tiller that I have ever seen. The price was in the cab window...I took some pictures....Think it was about $45K...To anyone who hasn't been to Antonio's web site it is worth the trip.

If you are looking for an inexpensive finish mower, check out the Caroni mowers from Agri-supply. I don't have one yet but will soon. I have emailed with several people who do have them and they are happy. A 3PT 60 inch rear discharge deck is less than $900.

Tom makes an excellent point about bleeding the lines. I was pleasantly surprised to find out about my 870 that it is self bleeding. Just add fuel and crank. Of course I didn't know that until after I ran it out of fuel and thought darn, this is going to be fun.

The four wheel drive greasing schedule shows your typical tie rod ends, the ends of the power steering cylinder and the axle pivot pin. The spindles are running in an oil bath.

I use crazy pipe. You can buy it a Home Depot, etc I got mine at a irrigation supply house its alot better for the holes don't stop up as bad. Its real cheep and saves a ton on water. the conectors cost pennys. Its flex 12 pipe soits easy to hook up to a solid pipe. Its above ground and is held in place by hand push staples 4' long 250 ft roll was like $16.00 you can move it after the season and reuse it next year. Its what all the farmers use locally for drip farming

I would like some suggestions on a second mower. My front lawn (3/4 ac.) has St. Aug. grass and is cut at 4" It has alot of landscaping features and my JD670 is to big for this area. Does anyone have any suggestions for a smaller mower which can bag. I have looked at a toro z- track, nice but a bit pricey for a second mower. Any other ideas?David

John, if that setup were new it would run about $24-27K in my area. Since the tractor only has 70 hours and some of the implements are new, I think $18K is a great deal. If it from a dealer then find out how much warranty is left on the machine or what he will give.

I am looking at a 1996 ford 2120 with about 800 hours. Has anyone had any experience, either good or bad, with this tractor?Also, it has a backhoe (ford factory) that is supposed to be a quick detach. Has anyone used one? The loader is also considered a quick detach but it has bolts that have to be taken off and doesn't look nearly as easy to remove as my jd loader. Thanks.
