ran a 1720 for about 2 mths with a loader. Neat tractor and strong enough for anything I asked from it. It had a shuttle shift on the column and that was nice. The thing I liked about it was the size, big enough to do the job and still compact enough to get into tight places. You'll be real happy with it. bo

Agree with Mike- Ted next time you are in a parking lot of a mall or large store, look at all the oil spills where cars park, some of it soaks in and some washes off into the sewer. Many municipalities have overspill permission where they, during a heavy rain ,can flush the sewage into the waterway untreated. Most gov. environemental regs allow x units of emissions. Most of US regulatory agencies work on a cost/benefit anaylsis where if it costs more to dispose of properly vs. benefit derived, then the reg. either isn't promulgated or not applied. Oil on mower decks, good idea.
The epoxy thing that Bill mentioned is something that interests me. I just put the two part epoxy on the barn floor and in the last three months, I abused the hell out of it. Super tough and nothing yet has damaged it. I used the Rust-o-leum [sp] and it was about 98 bucks and makes two gals. Super easy sweeping and looks real good. Needed two coats and about 300 bucks worth. If it would stick and perform as well on the mower deck then it is worth it if it can be bought in smaller quantities. I have some left over and will try it. too bad the deck isn't new as I'll have to clean the heck out of it to apply the epoxy. When the oil police come for me, I'm starting a Boston Tea Party. bo

Wild Bill---You ain't gonna get me started on that oil thing again. But I sure appreciate it if one the bright people on this board would think that there is no such thing as a dumb question {I personally think that there are dumb questions but generally am polite} and answer my dumb question where does the old grease go if it don't get slung or washed or evaporated out of greasable areas. bob---Go for the relay- haven't been able to keep track of the posts and caught your last one and it seems as if it is the same problem that I had on my boat. The selonoid would click and nothing else would happen. Would tell you how to check the current flow to the selonoid and starter except you don't know where the selonoid is and neither do I. It seems that you are getting enough juice to click the selenoid but not enough to crank the much higher amp starter. In the case of my boat, I tested current flow, determined it was the relay, bought an after market diode suppressed relay for $13 installed same, time -one hour- problem solved and saved over 35 bucks by not buying oem Mercruiser. {Just jarring the "pay any price oem boys"} bo

Mls- How about that. Knew old JD would eventually see the light. Old story of the 2x4 and the mule. Now it is going to up to the boys/girls with the problem to persue this in a professional manner. Might be a good idea for someone to go through the old posts and contact each one by email in case they are no longer reading this board. jason- your clutch isn't disengaging completely all at once. The clutch disk is too close and the previous post gave you some good advise. This business of "try" to fix is garbage. The linkage needs to be adjusted so there is more clearence at the clutch disk. You could wait for the clutch material to wear down and the clearence to increase, I wouldn't, if I'm doing close work with another human in front of the machine, forget front, I try not to let anyone in front of or behind the machine although, sometimes it is inevitable wherein someone has to work in front with the machine running, then I sure as heck wouldn't want the machine to "jump" or do anything that I wouldn't want it to do. Insist on a fix, not "try". bo

Jim- I think that you are putting snow blades onto buckets with the bucket still attached and the blade operates much as it does on a pickup. That is hydraulic lift and the wieght of the blade to lower. Clearence between the ground and the blade in the up position will only be about a foot or so unless the bucket is also lifted. The weight of the bucket with the blade attached then becomes pretty significant. If the bucket is removed and the blade is attached to a framework of angle iron ,similar to the frame that mounts under a pickup, then the even a smaller tractor should be able to handle the weight. I'm guessing the weight would be somewhere about 500-700-lbs. I think the lift capacity of a 4100 is about 700-800-. The advantage of eliminating the bucket is less weight,downpressure on the blade when not in float position and a usefull blade in high positions. There is a "sag" due to the weight of the blade stuck out so far,and this puts strain on the bucket curl hydraulic pistons. This is eliminate with a short piece of heavy chain between the blade frame and the center round cross bar on the loader arms. {jd 440 loader}a chain hook is welded to the cross bar and a keyhole slot is cut into the frame of the blade. The weight sag is significant and the chain is necessary or the curl hydraulic cylinders get hammered. Cliff didn't say his brand of tractor so it is tough to go any further. Either way verbal descriptions are never adequate. A picture or a example is almost a must. Once you see it, it's,"boy is that simple"type of thing. bo

Roger- No snow yet, They got a foot of the stuff south of us. Have the two tractor's blades mounted and ready. Huge disappointment. I think your post is in response to Cliff's who can get a hyd. Meyer blade for $200 and wanted to know if he should. I'll address the rest of this to Cliff, I would buy the blade for a couple of reasons. One, I always plowed snow with the smaller cub and prefer it to a snowblower and I suspect the JD870 with the curtise 6.6 foot hyd mounted blade can only be an improvement. The second reason, is that the curtise blade costs 1800 for the Jd. Your Meyer can be easily adapted to fit the method of attachment of the bucket by any good welding shop or your self if you have basic welding skills and access to a welder. The frame work on my curtise is simple angle iron, avialable at any scrap yard for .15lb or new. You didn't mention the brand of tractor you have but if the mounting is any thing like the 440 loader, I wouldn't hesitate. You might have to get creative and scrounge up a picture of a blade the would fit your tractor and get an idea how the attachment is made. You could probably pull of the deal for about $500, might have to buy some hydraulic line extensions,but the savings would hefty. bo

JK- Flails give a pretty good cut, drop the cuttings directly behind them, they aren't cheap, they will cut small brush and they are a pain in the butt to sharpen. The blades are reversable, but ultimately you'll have to sharpen 60-70 blades. The DOT in N.Y. just throws them away and buys new ones. Personally, I like the belly mower, only three blades to sharpen.bo

turfman- If you got a few minutes,could you check to see exactly where the dealer tied into the rear work light harness. My original thought would be to tie into the rear work lights within a few inches of them. Secondly, when you run the rop lights, do you have all your lights on and if so, does your alternator keep up with the current demands. Appreciate the effort. bo

Brent,gonna add my nickel, don't even think about a compact without 4wd. YOu'll not be happy. The Jd 870 in 4wd pulls as much as the 4500 ford in two wheel and the ford weighs twice as much. Iv'e been in situations where if wasn't for the four wheel, the tractor would still be there. The bucket is also invaluable. Got the JD buried in mud {turf tires} and the 4wd buried it deeper. Dropped the bucket and curled and pushed that little puppy out. Use the Jd for most every thing now. The thing is loaded with testosterone. bo
