Life is very simple, your tractor is a see-saw with the fulcrum being somewhere in the middle of the tractor. Too much weight in the front of the tractor-read load in bucket- and not enough in the back and you wind up on a three point landing looking at the ground {bucket and two front tires}and going no where. If your bucket is real high when this happens then you may merrily be flying throught the air playing superman. Depending if you got loaded rears and the weight of your tractor and the amount of load your bucket can lift you have to add enough weight on the back to counterbalance the front load. Read your owners manual-it should be real enlightening or just add about 400-600 lbs. on the back and carry your loaded bucket real low . The tractor will tell you if you have enough. bo

Roger -- been reading your posts and have been impressed with your knowledge. Bruce L just asked a question about the regen. circuit on the loader and what it is. I have one on my JD 870 and thought that it was a method of allowing a full bucket dump smoothly without slamming down. Mine also has a lockout. I never paid much attention to it cause The loader works fine. How about you take a few moments and explain the regen. circuit and the lockout in simple language. Would be appretiated. Bo

sounds like a very good price for equipment. I bought a 870/440ldr, 97 w/167hrs, 72" finish mower, york rake, single plow, 513 JD bush hog , curtis snowplow,weight bucket and suitcase weights and with the turf tires that I wanted for 18k and was happy to get it. Since that purchase no other compacts have shown up in this area for sale. I could have gone to the dealers but they were priced higher with less equipment. The 870,970,1070 are built more on the commercial side and thus are more rugged. You won't get the hydro. trans. but if it has synchro then shifting is fast and smooth. I have since put some heavy work on the tractor and I haven't even stressed it one bit. The 970 is the same configuration as the 870 but I beleive has 5 more hp. I would jump on the deal if the tractor isn't beat.

peter- I just jumped to the curtis web page and they indicate that a quick attachment is available. I'm curious as to what it is and how much lenght it adds to the plow and if it is really worth a few minutes saved. Their web site is www.curtiscab.com.

No power steering is a major headache when backing up a trailer but the real culprit is the lack of tongue length. The longer the tongue and the further the wheels from the tractor the easier it is to back up. Short trailers will jack knife in a flash. When I back up my garden cart with my 1650 Cub lawn tractor I have to make constant steering wheel adjusments and still upon occasion manage to jack knife. My boat trailer is backed up with my 870 JD and often it underresponds to the steering wheel that is, I have to crank the wheel to get the trailer to turn. Not so bad when there is space for a gradual turn and not so bad in a tight area cause the tractor can almost be perpendicular to the trailer not like a truck. Point being short means jack knife long means no problem. Ever wonder why the tractor trailer boys never seem to have a problem?

Yep, understand your problem, went to the barn after I got your post and checked my 870- fully adjustable- locknut and screwed in tie rod ends. Also attempted to check the toe in and at best came up with 1/4 inch toe in. But it all depends where you hold the tape. As it is I scuff the grass when I turn too sharp or fast and certainly when I forget to throw it out of 4 wheel. Slow on turns and very little scuff if any at all. But as the guy with the orange machines said in his post, I don't attempt to circle a tree but

bob- a box blade isn't going to bring back the stone into the center of the driveway very well. The only way a box blade will do that is to tilt it with the screw adjustment on the 3pt so that one end of the blade is up and then it sort of slides the stome out of that opening. Too much of a bother when you can get a angle blade which will do the job nicely. Also if you get one with optional sides to it, it will act like a box blade when you need it. Stick with a heavy angle blade. Bo

Roger, the guy pushing the snow just finished doing some wide sidewalks. He also had ag tires mine are turf. Don't know if it makes a difference. Sounds like if you get a blade and start moving snow with the angle and slew around towards your drop off you just might have a small problem on your hands. Understand your concern. I personaly prefer to push snow as I do now with my cub cause my 27 inch snowblower is a lot of walking and time and most of all with the wind in the wrong direction more gets on me then where it is supposed to go. Snows early and often? Give me a break all I want is 2feet once. If it went to 65 degrees and stayed there I couldn't be happier. Will let you know how it works out. Bo

Checked with my insurance agent who in turn checked with underwriters and my JD870, brushhog, york rake,belly mower, plow, grading box, and gill seeder are all covered for replacement cost due to fire and theft. My insurance co. is Liberty Mutual. Incidently, they also wrote it into my policy and sent me a copy.

My 870 is covered for replacement cost in case of fire or theft under my home owners policy and I assume{gotta check} for liability in case someone gets hurt.

Wont't be using my JD 870 for a about 4 months and wonder what type additative for the diesel is best to hold it for the long term. On the other hand, do you think that the fuel will hold for the 4 months without growing hair or some such. Thanks.
