I am interested in obtaining a 3 pt mounted log splitter for my NH 1925. The dealer where I bought the tractor has ordered a splitter from Bachtold Brothers. Due to some problems I have had with this dealer(I'll post my story later), I'm not sure if I want to buy from him or not. I belive the splitter is rated at 16 ton @ 2500 psi. I am wondering if the hyd. pump on the 1925 will run this splitter (split 18" - 30" hickory and oak)? It has a 4" clyinder and 4" I beam, 24" stroke with a 7"+- wedge. I saw it last week and I was not too impressed, but I have not seen it operate yet. Cost of the Bachtold is around $700, which is about my limit. Would a PTO driven splitter be better? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I should of said PTO driven hydraulic pump. Timberwolf has a splitter that is powered by tractor hydraulics and one that comes with a hydraulic pump that is powered by the PTO. Their splitters retail around $1300 w/o pump and $1750 w/ PTO pump. Thanks for the information on Northern Tool & Equipment. Their splitter sounds real similiar to the one I'm looking at. When they say "Has fittings to hook up cylinder and standard valve.", does it come with a standard valve? ....

Kevin,My understanding is that the Northern 3 point splitter is priced without a control valve so that you can order the appropriate valve for your tractor's hydraulic system (open or closed). Northern also offers two models of PTO tractor pumps in the $321.99 to $329.99 range. If you run one of these you will also need a hydraulic flud tank and filter. The entire rig should be under a grand. The Temberwolf is a good looking rig. ....

Have you ever heard of a Unicorn log splitter? It is a simple, non-hydraulic, screw-type machine that runs direct off the PTO. I have one, and it works really well. Brand-new they run around $400, and I got mine used for $250. Some people have an initial concern about safety, but aside from avoiding loose clothing (always a good idea around a tractor no matter what) the Unicorn is no better or worse than a hydraulic splitter in my opinion.Good luck! ....
