Hope this question doesn't sound really stupid, but does someone make a hydraulic driven device capable of turning a PTO type shaft? Reason for asking,is that I am looking into a rear mounted grass/leaf bagger system without the use of an extra engine. www.Trac-Vac.com makes a nice PTO driven unit, with only one problem. The unit hangs off the 3pt hitch as expected, but then you must attach a trailer off of the 3pt blower unit. Ending up with a rig that's probably close to 20' long! Not to mention that 1/2 our yard is (Sloped) thinned woods. Hence many leaves in a confined, uneven area. Not something I would like to tote a trailer around in while trying to mow around trees. Previous experience with my fathers trailer Trac-Vac system also tells me that once the trailer is more than 1/2 full, it has similar charactoristics to an overly full hay wagon sideways on a slope. I haven't physically seen the PTO unit, but it seems as if the blower unit could have been mounted much closer to the tractor. Thus a reduction in overall length. IF a capable hydraulic driven gear box exists, I may elect to Engineer something slightly different. The T-Vac blowers are driven by 5hp Briggs motors, therefore the Hydraulic box would need to be capable of 3 1/2k-4k RPMs, under 3-5hp ratings. Secondly, Would a JD4100 Hydraulic sys run the unit?, what are the downsides to using the hydraulic sys? All assuming such a creature exists. Hope nobody laughs too hard from this.

This isn't an answer, but some information I have come across that may help in drawing an analogy. Northern has just started listing hydraulic driven generators. The smallest unit is 3500KW. Drawing on the old rule of thumb that each KW requires 2 HP, I conclude that the hydraulic motor driving this is about 7 HP (assuming it is not too significantly over-rated). This generator unit is listed as requiring a minimum of 8 GMP which, I suspect, is much higher that a 4100 would produce (judging from my 755). I, like you, which I had a collector that doesn't require another engine (noise, maintenance) but I believe they have to use the additional engine because a small tractor like ours wouldn't have enough HP left to mow after driving the blower. Having said all that (including the editorializing) I am anxious to hear differing opinions. ....

I should also mention, in regards to req' horsepower.We still have an 1985 Allis C 12hp (1 cyl koehler(gas)) Hydro w/42" deck that has a rear mountedGrass/leaf bagger. Of which the blower unit was designed to be driven off the same drive belt as the mower deck. The 12hp AC runs the bagger without a problem. I guess the AC will have to makedue, until something better is discovered. ....

Sounds like you are trying to squeeze blood out of a turnip. The vacuum system takes a lot of power in addition to the mower. You also say you need to operate on slopes. A 20 Engine HP tractor (16 PTO hp) is probably not able to adequately power the 60 inch deck and a blower simultaneously. JD sells a 3-bag material collection system that will mount on your 4100 and not require a trailer. It is powered by 6 hp Kawasaki engine. The engine speed can be throttled back from the tractor seat if you are vacuuming light materials and don't need full power. If you need a vacuum system without a trailer for a 4100, this is a possibility to consider. ....

Check out the Ingersol lawn and garden tractor. All the attachments including the collection system run off its hydraulic system. It has only 18 HP!. ....

My Hesston 1014 14' swather is run off of hydro power, the pump runs off the PTO shaft of the tractor, and is run to another pump that turns the tine reel as well as the auger and sickle. I know this unit is a little bigger than your looking for, but maybe give you some sort of an idea on how to apply it to your situation. This unit also requires a min. of 50 PTO HP. ....
