Hi List, I'm looking at this tractor to work on 5 acers that needs clearing and smoothing... This guy calls himself a tractor broker and is offering this unit for 9,000.00 with no warranty. It has a loader, 5 foot box scrapper and an 9" auger for an extra 350.00. The meter reads 470hrs, the tractor looks good and appears to run good, but I'm still nervous cuz he won't give any warranty. Do you guys think this is a good price and should I take a chance with no warranty?

Many Thanks, Art

If he's not willing to stand behind his product, I'd walk away. I'd expect a 30 day warranty...no more then that though.
As a broker, he probably doesn't have a lot or shop, does he? If so, he'd have to contract out any maintenance or warranty work.
Of course, the price sounds good. If you check on machinerylink.com and machinefinder.com and get prices, you may find $9000 to be a good price.
Then, it depends on how much risk you want to take.
But if you're nervous, walk away... ....

I'd do some price checking and then maybe think about the broker deal. A small distinction, but brokers technically match buyers and sellers. They don't own things themselves. If he owns the tractor then I'd think of him as a used dealer rather than a broker.

The distinction is that if something about a deal goes wrong then there's nobody but the dealer to go back to. If whoever is dealt with has few assets then there's really no cure for a problem if the money's been paid--30-day warranty or not. An individual or shell corporation may have no assets to sue and a 30-day warranty from a small used dealer may be worth the paper it's written on.

It's probably better to think of it as a private sale and assess the risks accordingly. A possible alternative if the price seems good is to work a 30-day rent to buy deal. If the tractor isn't as represented after 30 days then a deposit and 1 month's rent is the only thing committed. Of course, a person should be up on contract terms for such a deal. The thread on 'too good to be true' also is relevant to this situation.

If the price is interesting and broker won't go for rent to buy or approval deal, then something likely is wrong with the tractor or it's such a good deal that flocks of other buyers are around.

I owned a JD 855 for awhile. Very nice machine. I ran it from about 100 to 500 hours. Loader, backhoe, and rake. The machine never had a problem. Great machine. I would advise maybe letting a mechanic check it out if your nervous. Also, the price you pay should be a consideration for buying without a warranty. I don't know if 9000 is a good deal but the tractor should be fine for your application. It was also cheap to run. Just don't expect it to be a bulldozer and DON"T LEND IT OUT-even to family. My family ended up fighting over it. That's why I sold it. Now I own something big enough where it can't be moved very easy. HA! ....
