One of the fellows at the hunting camp wants to buy a seedling tree planter that works from a 3 pt. hitch and pto. We are not talking about a quality long term use piece of equipment. We are looking for functional and cheep. We are located in Michigan. Any offers out there?

Get a "middlebuster" or a one tine subsoiler (~80 bucks) 3 pt. set-up. Take off any sweep tip and replace with a spear point. Fashion a 8-10" long planting "chamber" with parallel sides about 2-3" apart behind the shank about 8-9" deep with the back side open. Walking behind the tractor which is going slow, place the seedlings root in the slit and press the soil around it with your foot as the seedling comes out of the chamber. The chamber could be made from one piece of 3/8 steel plate "folded" around shank taking into consideration the forward angle of the shank and clamped to the shank with two bolt behind the shank- easily removable. An alternative is mount a "spud" or hefty wrecking bar hanging down from FEL, push it into the ground with down pressure about 7-8", wiggle it with either curl movment or slightly moving the tractor. Pull it out and a second person puts in a seedling and tucks it in with his foot. Soil conditions would have to be "damp",not too dry not too wet.

3/8" steel is pretty herky steel plate! It should be 3/16 or 1/8" in above post--RCH ....
