These two tractors seem to be quite comparable on paper except for the Hydraulics. The JD lists 17.4gpm and the NH lists 12.03gpm. I think this is because the NH has a separate pump for the steering that lists at 5.5gpm so the total is 17gpm. What does this mean? Can the JD dedicate all 17gpm to the implements while the NH can only dedicate 12gpm to the implements? Anything else I should look into?

Just from some of my observations I would try and find both tractors and operate them under your needs. I've found tractors with bigger hydraulic systems by gallons per minute but not as responsive or as powerful when it comes to working the outlets or a loader. The same with the power steering pumps not steering at an idle with a full bucket or even a part bucket often needing full RPMs. Pick your needs and judge accordingly. ....

Well I cansee a problem in this line of thinking... The NH is a CUT while the JD is a utility tractor ... when comparing it must be taken into consideration that a compact utility w/ same hp rating will not do the work of a utility tractor... The JD will lift more weight and at a higher rate of speed because of the type of pumps... The JD also has a independent ps pump which is where those numbers were quoted from.. The NH is a fine tractor but it will not compare to a heaver framed and larger capacity load carrying or lifting capability...of the Deere.. ....

Interesting comments about the JD vs. NH, although probably wrong in a lot of respects. NH lists the 48 as a utility tractor. It weighs around 300 pounds more than the Deere and has a greater lift capacity for the 3 pt.
Then again, as the saying goes, "lies, damn lies, and statistics".
Get an ag paper like the Capitol Press and look in the ads for used equipment. See how many NH aren't for sale and how many JD are. ....

The TC is a boomer which in turn by NHs standard is a compact utility...As fo 3 point lifting power the JdD will out lift the NH a,so w/ the fel.. we use both and the NH wins for modern style and is versatile for what it was designed to do but the Deere will lift, pull and all around everyday work....The 5105 will keep up w/ the tc55da in lifting ability but the NH will load faster as its hyds seem to be quicker response but no more lifting power. ....

The Synch Shuttle 8/4 transmission of the 5105 is not as high speed as a power reverser, but if you can work with it; I think the 5105 is the best bet for your proposed compared choice.
Not sure if you considered these but Massey Ferguson makes a fine utility trator and some mid range tractors that may be in a similiar cost catagory & offer a few more goodies. Have you looked at their 400,4300, & 5400 series tractors? They all come with Perkins diesels (now Catarpillar) and have a solid reputation. ....

I almost forgot to mention the Kioti DK65 & DK65C. This tractor in my opinion rates probably pound for pound the best buy on the market for the dollar spent. This tractor also comes with the time tested & reliable Perkins diesel. You won't find many other brands with the same features in this price catagory. ....

the TC 48 and 55 are utility tractors. They are not in the compact class. The compacts stop at the TC 45. ....

whats a couple hundred pounds amomgst friends?
Apples and apples as always need to be considered.
I am just darn glad there are atleast 3 companys competing with each other. Deer seems to be the standard that others try to meet or beat. That makes for a good tractor from all three. When it comes to poer and lifting cap. one should also take into consideration the price. If one outperforms the other in a 40hp catagory and you are or will push the limits at 40hp with one over the other maybe a 45hp in a different brand may be close to the cost of a 40hp of the other (I dont know just a thought) You may be better to upgrade in hp with a cheaper name but still keeping it in the top three names?
If any one has a preferance then the point is mute, but if your open maybe this could be an option. ....
