Let me embelish with a couple more pointers. I drove several 6 foot rebar down thru the block holes once laid to help stabilize them. Thus far, it doesn't appear that the weight of the dirt will bow out the blocks. However, I intend to order some more dirt to fill the block holes. I did that partially with one bed last year and planted some marigolds in them, which are supposed to be good for attracting beneficial insects. You could plant herbs or other things in those holes too.

I left about 6 inches of rebar sticking up and using 10 foot lenghths of gray PVC 3/4 inch conduit, I bent them over into hoops and put them over the rebar so I could but plastic or row protectors over the beds. Worked great!

One should be careful about accepting as true and passing on stories without first verifying. I've attached a link to a Houston newspaper article addressing the Louisiana mulch scare. Louisiana put mulch on lockdown. The only stuff that may get out is through lawbreakers, which makes it somewhat unlikely that Home Depot or other chains will end up with it.

I'd absolutely buy NH again. In fact, the guy who I bought my property from (40 hilly acres) owns an order Ford and has access to other tractors, couldn't pull an old hay bailer with the Ford and borrowed by NH. Subsequently he bought a 6 acre property that came with an older Kubota, but it didn't have power steering. He now says he plans on buying a new NH. What I consider to be one of the better indicators of owner loyalty is that when I look in the ads in the ag press (Capital News), you see few if any NH's for sale compared to Deeres and Kubotas. Certainly the others have more out there, but apparently the NH owners just hold on to them.

And for the same size tractor, buy all the horsepower you can afford.

Interesting comment about different tractors allegedly putting the same hp to the wheels. The problem with that theory would be - where to the additional ponies go? Once the engine produces the power, it's got to go to an output source - PTO, axle, or heat.

That one seems a little far-fetched to me.

Interesting comments about the JD vs. NH, although probably wrong in a lot of respects. NH lists the 48 as a utility tractor. It weighs around 300 pounds more than the Deere and has a greater lift capacity for the 3 pt.

Then again, as the saying goes, "lies, damn lies, and statistics".

Get an ag paper like the Capitol Press and look in the ads for used equipment. See how many NH aren't for sale and how many JD are.

Please don't anybody read anything between the lines and think I'm slighting my dealership. Just the opposite - they went out of their way to make it easy for me by sending somebody by my place one afternoon on his way home and he took care of the recall. The did exactly what they said they'd do. However, having said that, if it was something he could do in a comparatively short time out in my driveway, I'm inclined to believe that it wasn't rocket science and the affiliates near you ought to be able to handle the work. On the other hand, I could take a little pride in it if it was actually a matter of my dealer's guy being a mechanical genius who was a wizard at driveway repairs. At any rate, I used the tractor some this weekend, nothing heavy, and nothing with the PTO, but it appears to have been put back together properly.

Pretty sure that the disc did not, in fact, get all the way down. Funny you mentioned tiller as I'm thinking that's what I'll use next spring to really get things broken up and ready for planting. The plow accomplished what I wanted, which was to make sure I didn't have a layer of hard pan below and to give me some channels for drainage and roots.

I'm looking forward to responses regarding your problem of plowed ground falling back into the furrows as I had that happen some myself.

Thought you'd be getting close to plowing frozen ground up there at this time of year. Good luck!

I've got a Takagi here in Eugene, Oregon and LOVE IT!! I did alot of research before choosing the Takagi. I think the Bosch are solid units too, but my Takagi has 175,000 BTUs, which I'm not sure the Bosch could get to, and it's got the direct venting - powered vent to the outside and fresh air supply from the outside. The unit's in the attic above the bedroom and I don't hear more than a soft woosh when it fires up. I've got a control panel mounted on the wall so I can adjust the temperature to whatever I want. It is true that the efficiency and throughput will be somewhat effected by the temperature of the incoming water, but that hasn't been an issue for us and we're on a well. We have run the shower and dish washer at the same time with no problem.
The takagi web site is below. It suffers from the typical grammatical problems of translation between asian corporation and english language web site but it may provide some useful information.

The only other issue to address, is whether you have hard water or not. Hard water will almost certainly shorten the life with scaling in the heating chamber.

I'd recommend tankless to anybody.

Did a quick google search using "wood splitter screw pto" and came up with the link below. I remember a girlfriend's father 20+ years ago with something similar hooked up to the PTO of a Deutz diesel. Seemed to work like nobody's business. I wouldn't be surprised if product liability issues took them off the US market, but I haven't looked either. Seems like a viable option to hydraulic concerns.

My belated thanks to those who shared their thoughts. FWIW, most of the feedback was similar to my own conclusions. Guess it's always best to be able to see it, touch it, hear it, and taste it (if that's where your tastes run).
