Well, after rechecking the valve clearance (it was correct), the dealer decided to drain the fuel tank and refill it with fresh fluid. After disconnecting the fuel line, fuel barely came out. The fluid poured out once the fuel cap was removed.
Turns out the fuel cap wasn't venting properly. A new cap and the power is back to where it was. Go figure!!!

like lack of fuel or air,these little diesels are pretty
simple but durable. ....

Yes, it's always good if the fix turns out to be simple, even if finding it wasn't. That's an obscure problem, but one I have heard of.
Few mechanics would start off looking for the problem, but they'd probably tumble in that direction pretty fast since checking the fuel flow comes early in diagnosis work. Some tractors have filter screens inside the tank. It's good to know if a tractor has one becasue they can also cause obscure problems. ....

I'm glad you got it fixed as simply as that. It's strange how things show up at the oddest times. A completely different problem right after you had it worked on. I'm sure the dealer was very glad it turned out to be as simple as this. ....

I have been stymied by the poor venting cap once my self, replaced the cap on my Oliver and the tractor would quit after a while running. No fuel pump. ....

I have my own fuel cap story
I have a close friend who is a lead mechanic on a Winston Cup team, this guy is probably one of the sharpest mechanics I have ever met, and in off months, a good sorce of info to his mechanic friends in our shop.
As you can imagine, he is constantly traveling, and his wife (who is a real sweetheart, and my cousin) ends up mowing the lawn.
Last summer, their John Deere GT235 kept stalling out after 10 or 15 minutes of opration. She called me on a Sat. afternoon and, and on the way home I put in a fuel filter for her. It didn't help. I loaded the wounded Deere on the trailer and brought it back to the store, telling her we would have someone on it 1st thing Monday A.M.
She let her Hubby in on this problem when he called home that night, and he in turn called me and told me he would be home Monday evening, and since it was out of warrenty, he would fix it himself. I took it home Monday morning, not repaired, and no charges for the pick-up.
Here is the funny part.
After testing or changeing every part in the ignition system, rebuilding the carb, new fuel line, this all took three weeks, in between his traveling to races, every time he thought he had it, he would leave and his wife would call me again with a dead mower in the middle of the lawn. Her attitude was poor to say the least, and a bitter, ugly divorce was emminant.
I offered again, to have our tech look at it...... No dice. Made him an offer to trade...........No Deal. By now, it was more than a broken lawnmower to him, his reputation was on the line. Ad he was getting a little ribbing from just about everybody that knew about it, except me. I was giving him alot of ribbing as a payback for comments he had made when I was attempting to sew my lawn for the 4th time in a season. ("what's the matter? can't the old farmer get his grass to grow?? try sewing it with soybeans, grass seems to grow in your bean fields pretty well")
I consulted our service manager, and on the way home one night, I installed a new fuel cap. Problem solved! Well....the lawnmower problem anyway, his self esteem and promanance in the neighborhood may need a little work.
When he came home and was informed of the repair, and the remedial price of a gas cap, he reminded me of the high price of grass seed.
A friendship, and, a marriage was saved.

P.S.
The grass finally grew, and my bean fields never had a weed in them!!!!! And, his faulty gas cap is forever impailed to the plaque on his garage wall with an inscription that says "NASCAR'S greatest mechanic". It was a gift from me and our service manager (who was an alumn of the same trade school) for his 10th wedding aniversary. All's well that ends well!!!!

Guess what? It wasn't the fuel cap. After months of trying to work with this dealer I finally got fed up and went to another dealer. The tractor dyno tested at 17 hp at the pto. The valves were adjusted a little too tight, readjustment gained a couple of hp. Turns out the return fuel rail was installed upside down (twice at the first dealer!). When it was installed correctly the tractor put out 29.5 hp at the pto. Finally the power is where I remember it. The first dealer thought I was nuts. I had to pay the second dealer $260 for his effort which the first dealer said he would reimburse but I'm still waiting. ....
