 Shibaura SD4043 Information

There are some people here who probably know Shibaura models and maybe there'll be a better answer.

I did a little web searching and couldn't find 4043's listed. It may be an out of production model, which isn't necessarily a problem.

If you post the year of manufacture, #-of cylinder and engine displacement, I'll try to match it to Ford compacts in the '10-series. The engine code if available might be helpful but I think that the same basic engines have different codes when used in Ford or Shibaura tractors.

If the idea is to use a NH dealer for parts and service support for a Shibaura, I believe there are limitations to the idea. Shibaura built the engines but not necessarily the rest of the tractor and even with the same basic engine not all the parts are the same. I doubt that Shibaura and NH use the same part numbers even for identical parts. Unless there's a part number cross-reference somewhere there's no good way to tell which parts cross over from Ford to Shibaura.

 Shibaura SD4043 Information

The SD4043 doesn't have a US equivalent. I do have a parts book for it & can supply parts from my Japanese sources.

 Shibaura SD4043 Information

TomG:
The SD4043 is a 4WD, 45 hp, 4 cylinder with a displacement of 2116 CCs(I am not sure about the last digit on the displacement. I will note the engine code when I go back to the ranch later this week. Thanks for the help!

Leonard:
Great to know about the parts! Thanks!

45 engine HP is getting pretty big for a compact. If I've done my arithmetic right, 2116 cc's comes out to about 129 ci's. The displacement seems a bit small for 45 engine HP, but who knows.

Shibaura engines were used in Ford 2120's. They were 4-cylinder 138.5 c.i. engines rated at 38 engine HP. The 21-series was the largest Ford compact, and I guess it's possible that that engine with a different tuning could be rated at 45 hp, but it seems a little doubtful. I think NH does have compacts in that HP range but I'm not sure if they use Shibaura engines. Tractortips.com, which is where I get my specs from doesn't exactly list the engine manufacturers for NH tractors. Anyway, it seems doubtful that the 4043 has an engine used in Ford compacts or their NH successors, but maybe the engine crosses-over to a newer NH compact.

Once a tractor reaches 45 hp it isn't too compact. The SD4043 is not used in newer NH tractors. The SD4043 should be 48 engine hp. The same engine is used in the SD4643 at 54hp . It is turbocharged.

 Shibaura SD4043 Information

TomG, Leonard:
Wow! Thanks for all the information! Tractortips.com is very helpful.

What technically classifies a tractor as a compact? Wheelbase? HP? In the previous replies, is the horsepower for PTO or Engne?

I did a little surfing and research and found that the 4WD 2120 is very similar to my SD4043 in many regards: general appearance, 12/4 trans, and opt.tire size.

What else should I note on the tractor when I go the ranch later this week?

 Shibaura SD4043 Information

I'd take Leonard at his word and not expect the 4043 engine to cross to one supported by NH. Tractortips is pretty good for specs and I haven't found a better source. I have noted what I think are occasional errors in their data.

If looking at the tractor to buy there might be some evaluation tips in the archives but I can't remember a recent discussion. In general, it's appearance, hours and does everything work and sound right. The engine should not smoke (blue, gray or while) except gray puffs on acceleration. The TX and range gears should engage easily and there should be an inch or less clutch pedal free-play. Working with a bit of a load, the clutch should be solid and the TX shouldn't pop out of gear forward or reverse. If it has fairly low hours the seat should be decent and there should be some paint on the pedals and deck. Other people may contribute better tips.

Irrespective of the tractor's condition, I'd be certain that a plan for getting local parts and service is in place.

Regarding CUT definitions I think there is a long and indeterminate discussion on the subject in the archives. Personally I think CUT means about anything a marketing division wants it to mean. My impression is that the term originally was a marketing invention designed to bring typical Japanese Farm tractors to N.A. and distinguish them from the typical N.A. utilities that have been around for decades. I'm not even sure that Ford figured out the term since 2110 refers either to a mid-80's diesel compact and to a 60's gas utility tractor.

 Shibaura SD4043 Information

I got the details for the SD4043. As read from the side of the engine is the following: LEP854A 2133cc P760. This is modle, displacement, and I am not sure what the P760 is.

I bought the tractor as it is in great shape and and it will easily handle all my projects. Now I am just trying to do my research ahead of time knowing I will need to source parts in the future and it will be more difficult to do so. I do have a parts manual (in English) for the tractor.

Thanks for all the help!

Ed

 Shibaura SD4043 Information

Hello Ed,

I just rebuilt at Shibaura SE4040 with the same engine from the ground up -- transmission, 4-wheel, engine, hydraulics, electric, tires, paint. I found an abandoned tractor here in Ecuador that I scavenged for parts... It seems like a great machine for my needs (intensive agriculture) and what I have invested in it (now about USD 8,500). What has been your experience with the SD4043? Do you have any advice to share? Would you be willing to share a copy of that English language manual of yours?

Kind regards,
Steve
