Hydraulics question

I have a JD material collection system - the one that raises up and dumps. It might be a bit of overkill but it works very well, especially for picking up leaves. It always raises fine and makes the swing around the top to dump. sometimes, however, on the way down it swings back very slowly and lowers very slowly with a definite twist indicating that both sides are not coming down evenly. Once down, the latches do not pull down tight. I have ensured that the guide bars are clean and smooth although they aren't even in the picture yet when the swing back is taking place. What can cause this - it doesn't happen all of the time but often enough to be a pain. My guess is that one of the cylinders is not working properly but I am new at debugging hydraulic problems - what would cause it or am I off base? I don't want to go through the expense of replacing the cylinder only to find the condition doesn't change.Any ideas out there?thanks
