need a brush cutter for my 1998 NH 1630has anyone any experience with size. the question is either to go for the 5 footer or the 6 footer. my mowing needs will largely be one foot high grass, but may need to cut thru some occasional thick brush. would prefer to get a 6 footer, but does the 1630 have the poop ?? thanks in advance...rob

Most manufacturer web sites have recommended HP specs. Bush Hog recommended min HP for their SQ series (light duty single spindle) models are 25 HP for the 5' and 30 HP for the 6'. I believe some manufacturers spec their cutters for lower HP. At 22 PTO HP, the tractor might be a bit weak for even the 5' model. However, light duty usually means a cutting capacity up to 1" material. The HP requirements are less when cutting grass or using slow ground speeds. A dealer, or perhaps somebody here who has a lot of mowing experience will know how a 5' or 6' cutter performs at 22 HP. I'd keep in mind Murf's comment awhile back that rotary cutters are hard on PTO clutches. The wear and tear goes up as the cutter size and weight increases. A common practice is to stick with implements that just cover the rear tire tracks. That practice generally provides a decent match between tractor and implement without unduly stressing the tractor. I’d keep in mind that if you go with a larger cutter, it might work OK for grass, but the tractor would struggle with jobs where the bush contained saplings. ....

I run a 6' behind my JD 950 with 27 PTO hp. It cuts foot high grass with no problem running in high range and 2nd gear. However, if I get into 2' grass or higher, it does start straining the tractor. I can usually run high range and 1st gear, but I have had to go down to low range and sometimes 3rd gear if it is too high. Since most of what I mow is kept fairly short, this is not generally a problem. I haven't tried cutting brush. It would probably do it if I went real slow.
