L285 steering slack

I recently purchased a 1977 L285 and the steering wheel has about 5" of play before it engages. Talking with others, the thought is that the worm gear may be a little worn or need adjusting. Is there a way to adjust the worm gear on the steering or is there another thought to the slack.
