 Coil light stays on

Does any one have any ideas as to why my coil light would stay on? I have replaced the ignition key, but that didn't seem to solve the problem. Where else should I look and, will this lead to more problems (ie damage the glow plugs)? I have a 1997 L4200DT with about 1300 hours. As always, thanks for any advice.

Tom

Try turning the key to the upright position once the engine starts.

Won't that kill the engine???? Or should I pull the fuse that is linked to the key stop?

Thanks

Tom

I guess the light is the pre-heating or glow-plug indicator. You sure don't want to run a tractor with the glow plugs on. The question is whether they're actually on or not. You might say if the light is on whenever the key is in the run position, whether it stays on after pre-heating is used and whether it remains on when the switch is rotated of off and then back to run. Some tractors keep running if the switch is turned to off the glow plugs on some can be operated when the key is in start as well as in pre-heat. I don't know how a 4200 is set up.

If the light is remains on, I'd be inclined to take a voltage reading at the glow plugs. However, glow plugs are wired in parallel and create a very low resistance circuit. Probably less than a volt is dropped from anyplace on the circuit to ground, and some voltmeter readings may not be reliable. If the lights are on when ever the key is in run I think I'd disconnect the plug wiring (when the tractor is not running and the key is off or the battery disconnected) and measure the voltage from the disconnected plug wiring to ground. It should read battery voltage.

If it reads 12V then the plugs are on and the problem should be corrected before running the tractor. I don't know the tractors wiring, but many glow plug circuits are protected by 'main fuses' or 'fusable links.' If the circuit is so wired, taking out the link would be the only way to disable to glow plugs, and the tractor couldn't be started with the link removed.

There are two switches that might be at fault here. You probably will need a tech to check them out to know which one is bad.

I'm with Art on this one.

With the ignition system, if your glow indicator remains lit, or on, this would indicate that the spring load circuit in the primary ignition switch, for whatever reason, has failed, thusly creating either a short internally of this switch, or an open circuit internally of the switch. In this case, it sounds like a short, whereby the glow indicator circuit remains "hot" or energized which ultimately results in keeping your glow plug circuits "hot". This needs to be remedied post haste or you will find yourself with a more problems, fast.

I do not believe that the problem that you described is any farther downstream, as almost all other components are receiving their control instructions upstream, where it all starts, at the contact closure for this circuit, ie, the switch.

Willie H.
