Has anyone bought or used a catagory 1 post hole digger that is sold by Northern Tool. It lists for $359.00 with out the Augers which run from $89.00 for the 6" to $144.00 for the 14". I am thinking of buying one to attach to my B6200 for some fence work. Any thoughts?
Brian

I'd sure price after-market PHA's from a dealer before going mail order. Dealers tend to stick with after-market implements that work out well for their customers. They sure hear about the ones that don't. Dealers also are more likely to know if something will work on a particular tractor. Some PHA's can't be mounted on some compact tractors.

In addition, after-market equipment usually is just OEM components out together with a bit of fabrication. If something like a gearbox fails, it's probably easier for a dealer to identify a particular OEM part or equivalent from a manufacturer than an individual could from a mail-order house.

I could be wrong, but for me mail-order equipment has to have good enough prices for me to treat them as 'throwaways.' If they work, fine. If they break I throw them away and buy a new one without regret. I don't think the price mentioned in comparison prices for an after-market PHA from a dealer would get me to the throwaway point, and I did stick with my dealer for my PHA. On the other hand, although I haven't bought any equipment from Northern neither have I thrown away anything I have bought from them. I did throw away a yellow chain-saw from a box store though.

I've looked at all kinds of attachments from Northern for my
l3010 and would have to offer the opinion that on a whole
there stuff is lighter gage equipment than other mfg.
Unless you have real light duty work for your equipment.I'd check elsewear.

I agree, most of what is offered at Northern is of lighter gage build. I purchased a 3pt PHD at auction, brand new with a choice of auger size,( I picked the 9 incher ), and about 500 telephone pole posts later, all I had to replace was the sheer pins, ONCE.
Besides the cost at Northern, you still have shipping charges to contend with, as well as the trucking companies schedule.

I bought that model from Northern and use it on my BX2200. It makes a 5' hole in 5 seconds in soft dirt, longer for dryer/harder soil. With no hydraulic down pressure, it won't even put a dent in hardpan (this hardpan is close to the properties of concrete). A friend with a carbide tipped auger on a Bobcat can down pressure and cut the 2 ft.hardpan layer in about 15 seconds, but don't dream of drilling in hard stuff with the Northern model.
