Maybe I've got a real simple fix. When I think of squealing, pressure relief valves come to mind. Once I did bump my 3ph into lift mode while my 3ph hoe was mounted (the hoe mounts lock the 3ph down). There was a squeal and the engine definitely laboured but didn't quit. Another time iI pulled a quick connector to the hoe loose, which produced the same results. Considering the alternatives, a simple hydraulic problem would be a wonderful explanation.

There are number of compound bearings and bushings in engines and drive trains that might squeal. However, the bad ones I've heard tend to be broken squeaks rather than continuous tones. The crankshaft bearings themselves are really more like bushings and they tend to knock when they go bad. If there's oil pressure a bad one isn't likely to squeal.

Whether it's squealing, squeaking or knocking. If it's an engine component, the frequency should increase when engine rpm is increased. A hydraulic squeal wouldn't be so definitely related to engine rpm. If it's in the drive train, the sound will stop when a tractor is clutched except if it's the clutch through-out bearing and then it'll start. There's no way I know of to entirely isolate a HST from the engine. I hope these ideas help track down the problem.

I suppose I could add shriek to the list of noises. Sure is tough trying to describe things in writing. Maybe some day we'll all be recording these noises and sending sound clips around the net.
