I bought a B6200 earier this year. It has about 3400 hrs. on it and the engine is a little weak but it's been doing the work I needed it for. The other day I was working it fairly hard with a rototiller on it and sparks began coming from the exhaust. I let it cool down and changed gears and it ran fine after that. Has anyone seen this? Is there a place to get a short or long block to replace this engine or is rebuilding it my best choice.

That may have been soot burning out of the exhaust system. Tractor's probably been idled for hours. ....

Roy, you are right with your diagnosis. This tractor may need a good work out. How much oil is it consuming? ....

You should see the CN(GM) 9000 series locomotives burn carbon
They can light up the sky ....

Sure I've heard of this. Commonly diesels which aren't run hard enough to prevent excessive "coking" carbon build-up can develop hot spots in these carbon regions under sustained high output running. Damage? Only if your exhaust starts a fire. I've seen this climbing mountains behind some heavily loaded diesel pickups towing at full throttle. When this is done, they run better, not worse. Same for small diesels. A friend sells lots of diesels used in marine gen sets and takes trade-ins. One of his standard tricks is to run weak performers under full load for 30 minutes straight to see if they will start blowing sparks which makes them run better by restoring original design clearances and top dead center volume. If you don't feel so
adventuresome, but want the same effect without the sparking experience to regain sparkling performance (couldn't resist the similar word play), you can have the combustion cylinders blasted out with crushed walnut shells. Some Mercedes garages do this. But just burning them out is easier and cheaper. Also, several additives enable carbon deposit erosive removal while running. In my opinion, you would be prudent to clean out carbon from your diesel before considering rebuilding.

Absolutely...build-up of carbon. As you start rototilling. your inducing a good load on the old girl, that's what she wants!
Every tank full, I use Polar Brand engine/Fuel additive. This not only eliminates icing in the winter months, however, also aids in the removal of carbon build up. The first tank full, you'll think your running an old Vega!
Fourth of July is coming up soon, Drive it around town at night...you'll be the talk of the town!
