I'm doing my homework reagarding the purchase of a tractor, and have found this board very helpful. I purchased 15 acres in the desert in California, and am shopping for a 4wd to move dirt and small boulders, maintain a 600' gravel driveway, install a few hundred feet of sprinkler lines, build and maintain a horse corral, and tend a garden. I like everything about the B2910, except when comparing it to the size and cost of the L3000. Does the HST make that big a difference between these two? I grew up on a farm in the midwest (30 yrs ago) with JDeere and am used to going through the gears, so don't see that as a handicap for the L3000. The B2410 and the L3000 are similarly priced at my local dealer. I would be giving up weight and hp, but could opt for that if the HST is more important. I have not seen any posts here on the L3000, so would like your comments...

Ken, there's been a lot of discussions about whether the HST is worth the cost. I see it as being similar to a discussion as to whether an automatic transmission in your car is worth the cost. If you're going to be running long distances at constant speeds (open highway in your car or plowing big fields with your tractor), a manual transmission is great. But if you're going to be doing a lot of maneuvering and changing directions; forward and backward, (city traffic and parking in your car or front end loader work on the tractor) or if you're going to have relatively inexperienced operators, the HST will let you get the work done faster, easier, safer, etc. I've used both for many years, and now I'm spoiled. My pickup has an automatic transmission and my tractor is HST. If you need a bigger tractor than the B2910, consider the L3010. ....

Ken to do a good comparison you should be looking at the L-3010. Yes there is a price difference but a major tractor difference. Size is everything when moving stone and digging. I don't feel that the larger tractor would hinder you as you have not built your place yet so it would be easy to build it for the larger tractor. If you had to deal with pre existing structures than it would be different. Take the larger option if possible. ....
