the float control on my loader pops out of its detent easily when engaged and sometimes it does not even engage. could it be some trash in the system? it only has 58 hours so far.

Have you asked your dealer ?
May be just needs some control linkage adjustment and not going into dentent all the way.

Sound like a detent problem. There are a few types of detents. The most common used for float features are two spring loaded plungers in the end cap that fall into a groove on the spool to hold the spool in place against the centering spring pressure.

The most likely problem is weak or broken detent springs. I suppose the groove could be worn or have junk in it, or even the centering spring have too much tension--those explanations would be rare though. It's likely an easy fix and may not even require a specific part but it might be good to have a parts diagram of the valve before tackling it. ....

Jeeper: I had the very same problem at 31 hours on a 1230 loader and I think the valve is the same on these loaders a Prince double spool. The dealer worked on mine and returned the machine a week later with the valve "fixed". At 40 hours the detent cap broke off while the snow storm raged. Dealer gave me a new valve and I've had no problem since, but I did find that, as DK and Tom have said, the valve needs to be at least checked by an experienced person because the adjustment on the detent is critical to correct operation. ....

Humm, two of the same problem on new machines, and I mistrust coincidence but maybe it's just all the detective novels I read.

I should have added an obstructed spool that can't move full distance to my list of possibles, or maybe an inappropriate linkage. An obstruction or wrong throw also might account for a cap breaking off. I don't think of the caps as being subject to appreciable stress and wonder why one would break. As Blue said it sounds like something that should be checked.

There's a parts diagram of a typical loader valve assembly on my mini-pic site below so you can see what you'd be into for a do it yourself check.
