 JD 950 Idle

Whats everyone's 950 diesel's rpms at idle? Mine seems to hunt between about 600 and 900 but if I bump the throttle up a little bit it will run steady and purr along at 1000rpms exactly and never miss a beat. Get lower then that on the throtttle and it hunts. Do I have an injector problem starting or does the 950 idle at 1000rpms?

Todd

 JD 950 Idle

I worked my 950 several hours today dragging, cutting, and burning downed trees from last winters ice storm. Unfortunately, I did not read you post until tonight. I can say that mine idles very smoothly at a very low idle rate. I just don't remember at what rpm it is. The land where my tractor is located is 30 miles away and I probably won't be back there until next weekend. If you haven't gotten a better answer by then, I will try to remember to check my idle speed and let you know.

When I owned my JD 950 it would idle at 800 rpm. it sounds like you might be getting air into fuel system check all your hoses for cracks or loose fittings also check your fuel filter and its seal. I hope this helps JIM!

 JD 950 Idle

My Ford 1710 idles fine at 6 - 8 hundred, but the only I idle it that low is for cool downs, especially after hard runs. Diesels cool down at low idle speeds and may get lower than operating temperatures. Fuel combustion becomes incomplete and extended periods of low idle can gum up the engine, contaminate the oil etc.. I warm up at 1500 and idle at 1000 - 1200 most times. Still, most diesels should idle OK at low rpm’s, and several 790 owners say theirs do. If the tractor isn't smoking or making unusual noises at low idles and higher rpm operation is OK, I'd suspect a minor problem with the governor. In effect, the unstable low idle is equivalent to checking the min no-load rpm. You might also check the max no-load rpm, which is usually adjustable. In theory, a governor problem that could produce an unstable low idle also could result in a too high max no-load rpm. Anyway, there are several springs that can be broken, weights that can seize etc. in a governor.

Working on governors is a bit specialized, and I wouldn't tackle mine, except to maybe see if the springs were there and the linkage moved smoothly. Unless there were symptoms other than the unstable low idle, I'd probably just ignore it and run higher idles until next time the tractor is at the dealer.

Todd -- I finally got to check my idle speed. Mine idles smoothly at 600 rpm. However, I checked my manual and it says that the slow idle speed should be 850 rpm. So I guess I need to idle mine up a little. The manual also said that if the tractor is left at idle for more than 3 or 4 minutes at a time, it should be idled up to at least 1200 rpm because of carbon build up at very slow idle speeds due to incomplete combustion.
