I have a 1982 John Deere 1050 with manual steering. I would like to add a power steering and a front end loader. I have been told that John Deere sold an external power steering kit. The dealers tell me they no longer sell the kit. Does anyone know if this is true? Are there any aftermarket companies that sell power steering kits? Any help would be appreciated.

Larry,

I checked my Parts Catalog for my 950 and as of the printing
it lists a Complete Power Steering Kit is still available.
Me thinks the 950 and 1050 should be the same kit. I also checked
the http://jdparts.deere.com website and confirmed
(to the best of my ability) that it is still available. According
to JD's website the price is $819. Looks like there are two flavors
of kits one for a tractor with the Selective Control Valve (SCV) and
a second kit without. Here are the corresponding JD part numbers:

Part.#.............Description.......................................
AR90799 STEERING SYSTEM..POWER, COMPLETE LESS SELECTIVE CONTROL VALVE
AR90800 STEERING SYSTEM..POWER, COMPLETE WITH SELECTIVE CONTROL VALVE

Hope this information helps and good luck on the project.
Regards
Mark

As of last year they still sold the PS kits for most of the X50 series JDs. I was in the dealer looking for other things and just happened to look up the power steering kits, though I didn't look up the 1050 specifically. Price complete on some of the others was about $900. Real dandy kits with all the hoses, connectors, nuts, bolts....everything needed. One of the kits (for the 650 I think) even came with the cast bellcrank to replace the non power one that sits atop the left front wheel.
There ought to be some of the kits still out there. Hope you get one. Might require searching among some of the bigger dealers. For items that are discontinued, JD also has a dealer stock service where they will search the various dealers to see if someone has the part in stock. ....

Thanks Mark and Roger for your replies concerning the power steering kit. I could not find the kit through John Deere, but I got on the phone with Eagle Tractor in Eagle Lake TX, he put the part number on a hotline, and in two days they called me and had located the kit. When I received the kit it was complete and I installed it in about 4 hours. Thanks again for your help, I sure am glad folks like you take the time to relay this valuable information. ....

Congratulations! I'm flat tickled that you too the effort to get one of these kits....Every once in a while JD really comes up with a value and these power steering kits for the 650,750,850,950,1050 JDs just cannot be beat. I'm not surprised that they are being discontinued and I urge anyone with one of these tractors to try right now to track one down. This is the same kit that you would have gotten on the original tractor if it had been ordered with the optional power steering, and is substantially less expensive than when ordered as an option on the new tractor!
