Are you sure you got the serial #? It's on the rear transmission case under the PTO. Here is a handy site for specs, serial # etc ....

Yep, that's where I found the s/n. Thanks for the URL, I went there and it says mine is from the last year made, 1996. And the s/n was quite a bit higher than the starting one for 96, so maybe the seller was right when he said 98. Maybe that's when it got sold by the dealer. In any case I feel better knowing.
