 4400 Price

I would like to know if I have been quoted a fair price on a JD compact tractor. It was 21K for a 4400 HST 4wd, folding ROPS, mid and rear PTO, DSCV, 3rd DSCV, flat bar draft links, 430 loader with hoodguard, 1550mm bucket, and bucket level indicator. Also a JD613 Rotary cutter with slip clutch, foot guard, and 16" tire. Also I was wondering for ballast if a 7' blade would be adequate. I plan on using the tractor to move small amounts of sand and dirt. Any information on reliability, warranty, or quality of this machine would be appreciated. Will be using it for many years maintaining a small (20 acre) residence. Thanks for your help.

 4400 Price

Thomas: Relative to southwestern Wisconsin prices, your quote seems to be in the right ballpark. However, I would make sure that for that kind of money I was getting a tractor with the redesigned front axle, not the old axle and all of its problems (and potentially reduced resale value). Being on the cautious side myself, and given Deere's ballast recommendations for the 430 loader on the 4400, I would consider a seven foot blade a little on the light side as far as ballast goes. As for reliability, warranty, and quality … I guess we’ll all find out how good those were sooner or later! I feel that on the whole, Deere has been pretty good on those things. I just hope the 4400 and its cousins aren’t an exception with poor quality, dismal reliability, and in desperate need of a longer warranty. Good luck with whatever tractor you end up buying.

 4400 Price

I read your post regarding the 4400. Ive been very close to finalizing a deal on this tractor with front end loader, belly mower, 50 inch tiller, new axle etc produced within the last two months. I ve been researching this for three months and you can read my posts here and on Tractorbynet. I strongly urge you to do some research on your own. One guy E-mailed me privately withan extensive list of what has gone wrong with his 4400 including faulty front axle, failed hst, fogging dash. This was an early production model and the problems have been corrected by the dealer. But, like this individual I question why they have had so many problems. Read the Kubota posts...you wont see anything silmiliar. These guys have been very imformative and patient. Im still on the fence but I have to admit that I am seeing orange on that fence. Hope this helps.

Bernie--you stated "As for reliability, warranty, and quality … I guess we’ll all find out how good those (read JD4400) were sooner or later! I feel that on the whole, Deere has been pretty good on those things. I just hope the 4400 and its cousins aren’t an exception with poor quality, dismal reliability, and in desperate need of a longer warranty." Be advised that my 4400HST arrived about five months after the very first ones rolled off the assembly line. In the year that I have owned this tractor there have been a number of minor issues and some that were not so minor including problems with the front end and its turf-tearing, the PTO locked up at 8 hours, the HST transmission has been replaced, the brakes locked up, and the dash fogged when working in damp weather. When I get time, I will make a detailed listing of my experiences in the thread entitled "4400 Journal" on this bulletin board. My previous Kubota went ten years without ever needing to go back to the dealer and required only a ten dollar part for its total repair bill. While I am very disappointed in my JD 4400HST having so many difficulties, I feel very good that my dealer has been extremely supportive and JD has honored their warranty without argument. Mike S.
