We are looking at a '96 955 4wd, hydro with brand new rebuild on engine, 1400 hours, fel, 72" mmm, and turf tires for $11,750. The previous owner let the engine go bad by getting hot (loss of coolant). Was this a reliable model? Anyone know how much this model weighs, and if it would be too heavy for normal mowing around the house? We have 3 to 5 acres to mow. What horsepower did this model carry? I have a 72" bush hog and was curious if it would have enough hp (dealer says yes).

`They were great tractors, even today I don't believe anyone offers bigger HP in a small frame machine. They seem to hold their value very well although high hours like that on such a small machine would warrant a very thorough exam. The ones I have seen with that many hours were getting on the ragged side. Homeowners usually have difficulty putting those hours on and it could have been a contractor. ....

It would be perfect for mowing as they were light weight. A 72" bush hog may be a bit too heavy for the 3 point but it could run it on a HP basis. With a hydro you can easily slow down in the thick stuff. The condition of the loader and bucket can tell a lot about how the machine was used. I would lift the front end with the bucket and check wobble in the front wheels, tie rods, and leaks where the wheels pivot to steer. I think more in the $10,000 range unless really nice. If the engine had not been abused, it would have lasted twice as long with ease ....

I looked at it today at the dealer. They were closed, so will wait on test drive. The bucket has been reinforced with plate steel. I heard that the seal around the rear pto can leak. Saw oil staining back there, but nothing seeping. I am curious why the engine overheated in the first place, making the complete overhaul necessary with only 1400 hours. I will get the old owner's phone #.

How easy is it to push the hydro pedals? Am wondering if my wife would feel comfortable mowing with this. ....

There can be many reasons for the engine to overheat, the most common is probably not cleaning out the radiator screen after mowing. It has been several years since I ran one but I don't remember the pedals being hard to push. The fact that the bucket was repaired is a good indicator of its hard use, possible causing wear on the front axle and driveline. ....

The dealer mentioned this 1996 955 was owned by a tree nursery business. I have a feeling that the loader was left on all the time, and has really taken a toll on the front end. He has a 1998 955 with a 72"MMM that is in great shape for $12k. What if I bought the 1996 loader and bought the '98 955? What would a used 70 model loader be worth? I feel that would be a more reliable unit.

cs ....

I am not really sure. If it was in decent shape probably $1500 or so. ....

I own a 955 it has been totally satisfactory. It operates a 6 ft belly mower in heavy grass well. I frequently hit 1 to 2 inch dia limbs and it chops em up but if you overdo it the blade may twist the spindle bolt off. I have done no repairs in 10 years and about 400 hours of operation. I really like it. I mow 5 acres of lawn. You really do want to get a higher horsepower tractor for a large lawn as I let my grass get high and it takes 4 or 5 hours to mow. With lower horsepower I would have to go slower or use a smaller mower and it would take longer. ....

that 955 was a great tractor one of the first jd tractors i ever used my friend bought it and used it very little he owns a tree service when it sold it had 500 hours on it 350 of them i put on it it sold for 12500. 60" bush hog 70 loader plug araetor rear snow blade and a york rake i been kicking myself every since for not buying it but i had no idea what it was worth. infact he offered me a nice 3/4 ton 4x4 truck with dump bed, trailor, 955 all attachments for 20,000.00! i'm really sick about not buying it as i'm in the market for a tractor now. almost bought a 790 they told me it was a close too the 955 as i could get new < with out hydro> but upon compare of lift capacities/ hp it don't come close in my opinion i'll be looking 990. since there are no 955 around here for sale and i been looking over a year. i can tell you this much its a great driving tractor your wife will love it! my son at the time was about 12 he drove it used the loader and mower with no problems the peddles were very easy too push. the loader was very strong for the size tractor it is. ....
