I am replacing buttons, clutch is off transaxle, have removed allen screw assumed that would allow clutch to come apart. No go. Does clutch need to come apart? Can I rotate clutch enough to allow installation of new bottons?

You can change buttons without taking it apart. Twist the two sheaves until you can get a spacer ( I use a 3/8 drive 1/2" socket )between the two helixes right below the button. That will give you enough room to work. You have to take them apart with a press. ....
