I have a Gator HPX diesel which when the key is turned the starter motor turns but does not turn the engine. It just whirrs. Is this a problem with the drive clutch? Surely the starter motor which is a pre engaged type will not be energised until the drive cog has engaged the flywheel?

When the ignition goes to start it pulls the solenoid and makes the contacts that provide 12v to the starter motor, that is what you are doing. The other end of the solenoid is connected to a fork that engages the starter drive into the flywheel. Either the fork or the starter drive is bad. Starter drives go bad more than forks. Deere calls the starter drive a clutch. Deere has the parts if you feel like taking it apart, i'm sure new starters are 500.00+ ....
