I bought a used gator 6X4 with 132hrs on it. Guy told me it had some problems, one of them was the transmission would not go into forward. Reverse goes good but when I try to put it in forward I just get a metal knocking (i wouldn't call it a grinding), kinda like the gears are spinning and rubbing together, but not engaging. Anyone have any ideas? Think it is something I could fix myself? Thanks for any help

Two ideas. Either the pawl on the shifting fork is broken off and binding in the shift block and not allowing it to move the shift collar to the forward position, or the needle bearing under the forward gear dried up and fused the gear to the input shaft. If it is run low on fluid the bearings on the input shaft dry up first because they are the highest in the transaxle. Either way it has to come out and be split apart. ....
