 Price Check CX Gator 2004

I'm headed up to purchase, maybe? A 2004 CX Gator, no dents, no scratches and like new (almost) condition with 175 hours. Priced at $4125 plus tax from a JD dealer. Good deal or not? Seems a little "doggie" when first started up 40 degree day but otherwise seems ok. Anything I should be checking??
Thanks in advance.

Just picked up a 2004 cx a couple weeks ago, a real basic model, no extras at all. I bought mine privately, 85 hours, paid $3500.00, so $4150 from a dealer sounds in the ball park. Mine seems very cold blooded as well, you really have to nurse it until it warms up.

Gentlemen, the reason your Gators won't run when they're cold is because there is too much air jet in them. EPA will only let motors that conform to guidelines leave the factory. If you look at a new carb on a FE290D motor ( CXs have a FE250D, but the same idea ) you will see it has a 42 air jet in it. Older carbs had 40s and the earlier ones had 38s. To give you an idea of size, a 40 is about the size of the smallest probe in a cutting torch tip cleaning pack. The more air jet,the leaner the mixture. Basically your motor is getting too much air in the air/fuel mixture. As the motor warms,it creates heat and makes the air around it warmer. Warmer air is fatter,so not as much goes in the air jet,and WALLAH the thing runs better and everyone is happy. A smaller air jet will make it run better when it's cold, but when the motor heats up and not as much air gets in the jet, the motor goes to the rich side and EPA doesn't like that. Also, I bet if you ordered an air jet for an old carb you would get a 42 instead of a 38 and you would have to figure why it ran worse. The XUVs have it all figured out with EFI and meter the fuel according to temperature and that's why you only have to start them ONCE. I sure like mine.......

Yes, gatoraider, EFI has definite advantages over a manual choke, that's for sure. But on the other hand, I've never had a manual choke leave me stranded in the woods. Can't say the same for EFI. Smile

Mine has the 10 HP engine, which I think is the 290, I would need to go out and check for sure. They might of did something before it picked it up, as it runs better now. The hour meter shows 144 hours, and the machine looks like new (almost). I made a hitch and installed yesterday and now have to either get just the Brake/Tail light kit or the Deluxe light kit installed. Found them on eBay for $132/$242 plus shipping. Since we might be using after dark down at the lake, and on the lake roads I would feel safer with lights on at the rear. Hoping my local JD dealer would give me a "special" price as I buy a lot from them... we will see! Thanks for the reply!!
