 Mowing with a JD 4100

I am looking for a replacement for my JD425 garden tractor. I started looking at a 455. While at a dealer Friday looking at a 455 they had a 4100 setting close by. I decides to drive it and drove it next to the 455. The 4100 is a little larger and costs more, but it is a real tractor with 3 pt, hydraulic outlets, PTO & 4WD. If the 3 pt & pto are added to the 455 the cost difference is not that great & you are still limited to the attachments that can be used. I mow about 3 acres. I do own a JD4400 with loader & backhoe, but it is to big for the areas I mow. Anyone else moved from a garden tractor to a 4100 or similar size tractor for mowing? Chris

 Mowing with a JD 4100

Chris, I have a 4100 with a 54" mid-mount mower. It does a great job mowing-no complaints. I have the mulching kit and R4 tires. No turf tearing with the R4 tires. It also surprisingly has been one heck of a workhorse for me. I use a rear grader blade to plow snow and cut dirt, a 52" rottotiller, a 14" one bottom plow, a 54" boxblade and rear scoop with mine. Really a great size tractor -small and light enough to do a good job mowing, but is capable of lots more. I would strongly recommend that you order the mower deck lift latch kit. It lets you lock the deck in the raised position and use the 3 pt. hitch at the same time-very handy.

 Mowing with a JD 4100

I moved up from a JD318 to a JD755 w/ 60" mid-mount, 4wd and turfs and have never regretted it. The size of the machine (similar to a 4100) is perfect for mowing, roto-tilling, snow removal, dirt removal, picking up leaves with a vacuum collector, etc. I've recently added a JD7 backhoe. There are times I wish I had a little more hp, but let's face it - one will always want a little more hp and the manueverability of this small compact is ideal for mowing around all of the trees.

 Mowing with a JD 4100

I was in the exact same position 18 months ago, only it was a JD318 that I was looking to trade in. I looked at the 455 but like you said it was still a garden tractor and dressed up with attachments it was close to the 4100 in price. Close enough that it was a no brainer really. In the end I went with a Kubota B2400 because of the long delivery times on the 4100 back then (and problems with the dealer's attitude) and have never regretted it. With a 5' rear discharge, 3pt mower it initially cut my mowing time for a 2 acre+ yard with lots of trees, roughly in half. Since then I have installed a mulching kit which has slowed me down a little but it is still faster than with the 318.

 Mowing with a JD 4100

I have a 4100 and it's a great cutting machine. The diesel engines give tons of power. There is really no comparsion between the 425, 445 and 4100, I have owned them all. If you just interested in grass the 400 series are great, but if you want to do more then I would suggest the 4100.
